Student Training

To ensure students know their rights and responsibilities, students are required to complete Civil Rights training once a year, with specialized additional trainings also offered for specific student populations. Civil Rights training for all currently enrolled students and specific populations of students is required by Attachment G of the CSU Nondiscrimination Policy.

The required annual training for all enrolled students is offered via Canvas. Please view instructions for accessing the Canvas training course below.

Annual Civil Rights Training Via Canvas for All Students

All students must complete an online training within the first few weeks of starting class each academic year. This includes all first-time freshmen, transfer students, returning students, international students, graduate students, and extended education students. The annual training requirement applies to every CSUF student enrolled in at least one academic course across all academic programs regardless of whether their classes are online, in person, or hybrid.

There are separate Civil Rights training courses for returning students and new students. All enrolled students will be assigned the appropriate self-paced course in Canvas.

Failure to complete the annual training on Canvas by the assigned deadline will result in a registration hold placed on students’ accounts.

How to Access Your Civil Rights Training on Canvas

Below are step-by-step instructions for completing your assigned Canvas training in Canvas:

  1. Log into your Student Portal using your CSUF username and password.
  2. Navigate to the left side fo the page under "Apps" to locate the Canvas app, or use the search bar to find it.
  3. Click on the Canvas app to log in to Canvas.
  4. Once you are logged in to Canvas, you should see a Civil Rights Training course tile on your Dashboard. The course will be titled with the current semester, year, and student status, either "New" or "Returning."
  5. Click on the course and navigate to the Modules using the navigation pane on the left side of the screen.
  6. Locate "Module 1: Course Orientation and Instructions." Click on "Start Here: Course Orientation" to get started.
  7. Complete the interactive course. There will be videos with embedded quiz questions. You must earn a cumulative score of at least 80% across all video quizzes to successfully complete the course. The course should take about one hour to complete in total, but each video is about 2-6 minutes long. Students can start and stop the course as needed.

Training Deadline

Students should complete the assigned training as soon as possible and by the date listed in their assigned Civil Rights Training Canvas page.

A registration hold will be placed on the accounts of students who do not complete the training by the assigned deadline. This type of hold prevents changes to class schedules and class registration, and it cannot be lifted until after the successful completion of the assigned Civil Rights training with a cumulative score of 80% or higher.

Technical Difficulties and Canvas Support

If you are experiencing issues with your assigned Canvas course, please chat with Canvas support by clicking the "Help" button in the blue left-hand navigation bar from within Canvas. You can also submit a ticket for technical difficulties through the "Help" button.

Alternative Training Option

Any student who finds the content of the assigned online course difficult or upsetting has the opportunity to request an alternative format for the training, which can be conducted via Zoom, in person, over the phone, or through another medium that best fits the student's needs.

The alternative format takes the same amount of time to complete as the self-paced course and must be scheduled with a member of the Office for Civil Rights and Equity.

To request to join an alternative format Zoom webinar for the annual Civil Rights student training, please email [email protected] before your training deadline.

Please note: The alternative format is offered out of consideration for the sensitive course content, but it is not designed as a replacement for students having technical difficulties. Canvas Support offers technical assistance and solutions, and they can be reached by clicking the "Help" button in the bottom-left of your screen while logged into Canvas.

Special Populations

Per the CSU Nondiscrimination Policy, the Office for Civil Rights and Equity is responsible for providing specialized primary prevention and awareness training for identified student populations, including student athletes, Sports Club participants, members of recognized fraternities and sororities, and members of all other registered student organizations.

New for Spring 2026: Student Organization Nondiscrimination Trainings

New CSU Nondiscrimination Policy prevention requirements starting in 2025-2026 require students who participate in recognized student organizations to receive at least one supplemental civil rights training per year beyond the annual Canvas course assigned to all registered students. CSUF’s Student Life and Leadership has identified that certain registered student organizations meet the new criteria for this new additional training. To be eligible for re-registration for Fall 2026, each identified student organization must have at least 80% of its membership participate in a Student Organization Nondiscrimination Training during Spring 2026 and Summer 2026 either via Zoom webinar or a make-up Canvas course.

The Office for Civil Rights and Equity hosted 16 Zoom webinars in Spring 2026, and now all remaining trainings between April and September 2026 will take place through the make-up Canvas course. To complete this training as part of the 80% of their organization’s required completion rate between April 30 and September 1, 2026, student org members will need to complete all modules in the Nondiscrimination Training make-up Canvas course and complete both video quizzes with a cumulative score of at least 80%. The Office for Civil Rights and Equity and Student Life and Leadership will monitor course completions and update club rosters accordingly.

Any questions about club rosters or club completion rates can be directed to José Rivera-Hernandez, Coordinator for Student Organizations in Student Life and Leadership, at [email protected]

Student Organization Requirements

Student Life and Leadership shared information with club leadership and members about whether their club has been identified as needing additional training. To be eligible for re-registration for Fall 2026, each identified student organization must have at least 80% of their membership participate in a Student Organization Nondiscrimination Training during the Spring 2026 semester. Between April and September 2026, all remaining trainings will take place through the make-up Canvas course.

Individual Org Member Requirements

To complete the training as part of the 80% attendance for their student organization, individual club/org members who have not already attended a Sports Club, FSL, or Nondiscrimination Training for Student Orgs Zoom webinar hosted by the Office for Civil Rights and Equity during the 2025-2026 academic year can complete the training asynchronously via Canvas. If you have the make-up Canvas course on your Canvas dashboard, that is a good indication that a student organization you are a member of has met the criteria. You can support your student organization's 80% completion rate by completing the make-up Canvas course.

Content Advisory: This training will discuss topics such as Affirmative Consent, Sexual Harassment, Sexual Misconduct, Dating Violence, Domestic Violence, Sexual Exploitation, Stalking, Retaliation, and Harassment and Discrimination based on identities (called Protected Statuses). However, the Zoom webinar format has been selected to allow students to participate in the interactive portions with utmost privacy without their camera or microphone activated. If you believe that the training may be activating or upsetting for you, please contact [email protected] to discuss alternative formats.
