Student Training

To ensure students know their rights and responsibilities, students are required to complete Civil Rights training once a year, with specialized additional trainings also offered for specific student populations. Civil Rights training for all currently enrolled students and specific populations of students is required by Attachment G of the CSU Nondiscrimination Policy.

The required annual training for all enrolled students is offered via Canvas. Please view instructions for accessing the Canvas training course below.

Annual Civil Rights Training Via Canvas for All Students

All students must complete an online training within the first few weeks of starting class each academic year. This includes all first-time freshmen, transfer students, returning students, international students, graduate students, and extended education students. The annual training requirement applies to every CSUF student enrolled in at least one academic course across all academic programs regardless of whether their classes are online, in person, or hybrid.

There are separate Civil Rights training courses for returning students and new students. All enrolled students will be assigned the appropriate self-paced course in Canvas.

Failure to complete the annual training on Canvas by the assigned deadline will result in a registration hold placed on students’ accounts.

How to Access Your Civil Rights Training on Canvas

Below are step-by-step instructions for completing your assigned Canvas training in Canvas:

  1. Log into your Student Portal using your CSUF username and password.
  2. Navigate to the left side fo the page under "Apps" to locate the Canvas app, or use the search bar to find it.
  3. Click on the Canvas app to log in to Canvas.
  4. Once you are logged in to Canvas, you should see a Civil Rights Training course tile on your Dashboard. The course will be titled with the current semester, year, and student status, either "New" or "Returning."
  5. Click on the course and navigate to the Modules using the navigation pane on the left side of the screen.
  6. Locate "Module 1: Course Orientation and Instructions." Click on "Start Here: Course Orientation" to get started.
  7. Complete the interactive course. There will be videos with embedded quiz questions. You must earn a cumulative score of at least 80% across all video quizzes to successfully complete the course. The course should take about one hour to complete in total, but each video is about 2-6 minutes long. Students can start and stop the course as needed.

Training Deadline

Students should complete the assigned training as soon as possible and by the date listed in their assigned Civil Rights Training Canvas page.

A registration hold will be placed on the accounts of students who do not complete the training by the assigned deadline. This type of hold prevents changes to class schedules and class registration, and it cannot be lifted until after the successful completion of the assigned Civil Rights training with a cumulative score of 80% or higher.

Technical Difficulties and Canvas Support

If you are experiencing issues with your assigned Canvas course, please chat with Canvas support by clicking the "Help" button in the blue left-hand navigation bar from within Canvas. You can also submit a ticket for technical difficulties through the "Help" button.

Alternative Training Option

Any student who finds the content of the assigned online course difficult or upsetting has the opportunity to request an alternative format for the training, which can be conducted via Zoom, in person, over the phone, or through another medium that best fits the student's needs.

The alternative format takes the same amount of time to complete as the self-paced course and must be scheduled with a member of the Office for Civil Rights and Equity.

To request to join an alternative format Zoom webinar for the annual Civil Rights student training, please email civilrightstraining@fullerton.edu before your training deadline.

Please note: The alternative format is offered out of consideration for the sensitive course content, but it is not designed as a replacement for students having technical difficulties. Canvas Support offers technical assistance and solutions, and they can be reached by clicking the "Help" button in the bottom-left of your screen while logged into Canvas.

Special Populations

Per the CSU Nondiscrimination Policy, the Office for Civil Rights and Equity is responsible for providing specialized primary prevention and awareness training for identified student populations, including student athletes, Sports Club participants, members of recognized fraternities and sororities, and members of all other registered student organizations.

New for Spring 2026: Student Organization Nondiscrimination Trainings

CSUF’s Office for Civil Rights and Equity is hosting a series of Student Organization Nondiscrimination Trainings for all members of registered student clubs and organizations. New CSU Nondiscrimination Policy prevention requirements starting in 2025-2026 require students who participate in recognized student organizations to receive at least one supplemental civil rights training per year beyond the annual Canvas course assigned to all registered students.

The Student Organization Nondiscrimination Trainings are live, interactive Zoom webinars focused on the unique factors associated with the org activities and involvement and ways that student members can create safer and more inclusive club environments.

Student Organization Requirements

To be eligible for re-registration for Fall 2026, each student organization must have at least 80% of their membership participate in a Student Organization Nondiscrimination Training during the Spring 2026 semester. Members who already have documented attendance at a supplemental Office for Civil Rights and Equity training as a member of a Sports Club or FSL chapter during the 2025-2026 academic year will have that training count toward their club’s total training percentage.

Individual Org Member Requirements

To fulfill their attendance requirement, individual club/org members who have not already attended a Sports Club or FSL training hosted by the Office for Civil Rights and Equity during the 2025-2026 academic year must attend a Student Organization Nondiscrimination Training via Zoom.

Successful completion of a Student Organization Nondiscrimination Training requires 1) attending the Zoom webinar in its entirety, 2) appropriately participating in the interactive portions throughout the 45-minute webinar, and 3) completing a survey at the end of the webinar. Failure to fulfill all three portions of the requirement will mean that the individual will not “count” toward their organization’s required 80% completion rate.

Content Advisory: This training will discuss topics such as Affirmative Consent, Sexual Harassment, Sexual Misconduct, Dating Violence, Domestic Violence, Sexual Exploitation, Stalking, Retaliation, and Harassment and Discrimination based on identities (called Protected Statuses). However, the Zoom webinar format has been selected to allow students to participate in the interactive portions with utmost privacy without their camera or microphone activated. If you believe that the training may be activating or upsetting for you, please contact civilrightstraining@fullerton.edu to discuss alternative formats.

FAQs

  • Question: I already attended an Office for Civil Rights and Equity training as a member of a Sports Club or FSL chapter. Do I have to complete this training too for my other club(s)
    • Answer: No. If you already have documented completion of a relevant Sports Club or FSL training between August 2025 and now, Student Life & Leadership has your training already marked as complete. Your training from your Sports Club or FSL chapter is already counting toward your club’s required minimum 80% completion rate. Please contact José Rivera-Hernandez, Coordinator for Student Organizations in Student Life and Leadership, if you wish to verify that your Sports Club or FSL training will count. You can email José at jrivera-hernandez@fullerton.edu . Please note that completing the annual Civil Rights Training via Canvas does not count toward your completion of the Student Organization Nondiscrimination Training, as the training for student organizations is in addition to the annual Canvas course.
  • Question: What if I can no longer attend the training that I registered for?
    • Answer: You can cancel your registration by clicking the appropriate link in your confirmation email, and then you can register for a different webinar listed on this page. For Spring 2026, the last webinar takes place in early March.
  • Question: What does it mean that the webinar is “interactive”?
    • Answer: Throughout each webinar, there will be interactive activities to complete, often in a quiz-like format. You will need to participate in the activities throughout the webinar. You will also need to complete a survey at the end of the training. We suggest that you use a laptop or tablet for the best experience, but a smartphone should also suffice. Your camera and microphone will be deactivated during the training, but you can message the hosts of the webinar with questions or concerns.
  • Question: I am a leader of my organization. How can I find out which of my org members still need to complete the training?
    • Answer: Please contact José Rivera-Hernandez, Coordinator for Student Organizations in Student Life and Leadership to learn more about which members of your club have not yet completed a training. You can email him at jrivera-hernandez@fullerton.edu .
  • Question: I am a leader of my organization. How will I know if my club has reached the minimum 80% training completion threshold to be cleared for re-registration?
    • Answer: For any questions regarding your club’s roster and training completion rate, please contact José Rivera-Hernandez, Coordinator for Student Organizations in Student Life and Leadership. You can email him at jrivera-hernandez@fullerton.edu .
