Every term, the Office of Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness (OAIE) publishes Cal State Fullerton’s student population profile, including headcount by college, student level, and where new students are coming from.

This spring, the total headcount of students enrolled at Cal State Fullerton was 39,556. Colleges with the highest enrollments by headcount were the College of Business and Economics (8,693), the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (8,597), and the College of Health and Human Development (7,078). Of the 2,925 new students enrolled at Cal State Fullerton in spring 2021, 2,292 were upper-division transfer students. The number of new transfer students decreased by 338 from the previous spring, which balances out the enrollment surge seen in fall 2020.

Although the number of new transfer students decreased from last year, there was a record high of 96.64% students transferring from California Community Colleges. The majority transferred from either an Orange County institution (67.7%) or a Los Angeles County institution (19.1%). The number of new transfer students from Orange County institutions increased by 8.5 percentage points from spring 2020 (59.2%).

The number of new master’s students enrolled at Cal State Fullerton was 433, a significant increase from 325 the previous spring. Like the new transfer students, a record number of new master’s students came from California institutions (CSU, UC, CA private). This spring, 81.8% of new master’s students came from California institutions compared to 69.2% in spring 2020.

The increase in the percentage of upper-division transfer students and new master’s students who come from California institutions may be due in part to the current pandemic. According to multiple reports, including one by ABC NewsOpens in new window , students are choosing to attend universities closer to home in case of another lockdown. There is no indication, at this time, about how the pandemic will influence the enrollment patterns in fall 2021.

Cal State Fullerton Celebrates Growth - 9/29/2020

As the Fall semester kicks off here at Cal State Fullerton, the Office of Assessment and Institutional Research is proud to share some positivity during these uncertain times.

It was a record-breaking year for degrees awarded in 2019/2020. The overall number of degrees awarded to Hispanic students (X,XXX) reached a new high. This high included new records for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees awarded for both Hispanic women and men (see Table 1). The records set are part of a steady incline of Hispanic graduates that have taken place over the last few years. This is a welcomed trend as the University continues to serve as an HSI institution.

The achievement is also part of larger success for Cal State Fullerton in setting a new record for degrees awarded to underrepresented students (see Figure 1 or Table 2), including any student who has identified their race/ethnicity as African American, American Indian or Native American, Hispanic, or Pacific Islander.

Cal State Fullerton also ranked as a top 20 Regional West University by US News & World Report. Our accolades in the report include ranking number nine in the social mobility category and number five in the most innovative category. The success in the rise of degrees awarded attributes to social mobility rankings as degrees tend to allow for upward mobility for generations to come.

Degree data is collected and updated every year. It can be viewed and downloaded via the dashboards on the Office of Assessment and Institutional Research’s website at http://www.fullerton.edu/data/institutionalresearch/ . Viewers can study the trends described in this article and more by exploring the dashboards and adjusting dashboard filters to get specific information.
