Referrals

Care Services may be needed when students experience distress that hinders them academically, emotionally, behaviorally, or physically. If you have already intervened but the student is still distressed or the worrisome behaviors have persisted, or if you seek consultation on how to respond, please complete a referral and our staff will respond within 2-3 business day(s) . Please be patient as we process referrals in as timely a manner as possible.

Make A Referral

Before You Refer, Intervene First

Faculty and staff should intervene when they first observe a student in distress or displays of worrisome behavior. Your attention could help ease a student’s well-being or de-escalate a difficult situation.

If you’ve intervened, but the distress or worrisome behavior persists, you can make a referral.

When to Refer a Student

Different signs of distress could raise concerns. These may be behaviors that you observe or that are reported to you by students, faculty, staff, or visitors.  Examples of circumstances that would be appropriate for a referral and outreach may include, but are not limited to, instances where a student.

  • Writes about threats to harm self or others.
  • Reports feeling stressed, anxious, isolated, depressed, or overwhelmed transitioning to campus.
  • Displays intense emotion (anxiety and panic) or inappropriate emotional outbursts (unprovoked anger, aggression, or hostility).
  • Experiences family, relationship, or interpersonal problems.
  • Experiences grief due to death of a loved one.

You can make a referral by completing the  Student in Distress Referral form. If you have questions please contact us via email at deanofstudents@fullerton.edu  or call us at (657) 278-3211.

What to Expect When Referring a Student

Care Services are voluntary. Outreach is extended out of an abundance of care for a student's well-being. Students are not required to meet with Care Services staff and meetings are not punitive.
