Classroom Accommodations

ASL Interpreter

Provided by DSS. DSS will assign a sign language interpreter to attend the course and provide American Sign Language translation of the lecture and course discussion. 

Assisted Listening Device

Provided by DSS. A listening device that provides amplified sound directly to the ear, with the speaker using a microphone to help focus the sound. 

Audio Recording of Lecture

Provided by Student. Student has permission to record the lecture on their own recording device for ADA access. Limitations may apply. Students sign a usage agreement with DSS.                       

Classroom Furniture

Provided by DSS. DSS will request a chair, table, or adjustable height table to be placed in the classroom by facilities. Students must request furniture from DSS for specific classrooms each semester.   If you notice furniture missing, please contact DSS. 

Closed Captioning of all video content

Provided by DSS. According to Section 508, all video content must be captioned for equal access.  Provide all video materials to DSS asap. 

Food or drink in class

Provided by Student. For medical reasons, food or drink may be required by the student during class time. 

Laptop for Notetaking

Provided by Student. The student will need to use their laptop during class in order to take notes. This can be for a variety of disabilities where manual writing is difficult. 

Modified Attendance

Provided by DSS/Instructor. An exception to the attendance policy as stated on the syllabus as an ADA modification. May not be applicable for all courses.

Notetaker Required

Provided by DSS. Student is unable to take their own notes in class, so will be provided a notetaker or other technology by DSS. Student may go through the volunteer notetaking process initially. See process here: http://bit.ly/csufnotetaker 

Notetaking Software

Provided by DSS. DSS provides software for students to facilitate with notetaking, such as Sonocent. Laptop will also be required for taking notes in class. 

Participation Assistant

Provided by DSS. An assistant is required in order for the student to participate in the course. This assistant is hired by DSS to be the student’s hands or eyes during portions of class. The participation assistant is directed by the student and does not provide personal services. 

Peer Volunteer Notes

Provided by DSS. The student has requested a copy of a classmates notes to review and compare with their own notes. Please see notetaking process here:  http://bit.ly/csufnotetaker

Personal Care Assistant

Provided by Student. A personal care assistant provides personal intimate care for the student and is not provided by DSS. The individual is hired and directed by the student to assist with a variety of personal care needs. 

Provide all course materials, PowerPoints, handouts to DSS prior to class

Provided by Instructor. This accommodation is required for all blind or visually impaired students so that DSS may convert all of the materials into an accessible format for the student. Law requires that course materials be made available before or at the same time as other classmates. 

Provide PowerPoints or lecture notes to student when available

Provided by Instructor. This accommodation provides the PowerPoint lectures before or after the course for the student to review as they may have difficulty following along when it is originally presented. Only when applicable.   

Real-time captioning (CART)

Provided by DSS. DSS assigns a captionist to attend the course to create a word by word transcription of the course lecture and discussion by using a stenographer machine. The student often follows along on their computer screen. 

Seating for personal assistant/captionist/interpreter

Provided by Instructor. An additional seat is required in this course. If there is not a seat available, please contact DSS so we can request a chair from facilities. 

 Service Dog

Provided by student. A service dog is allowed most anywhere on campus, including the classroom and lab except in specific situations. A service dog has been trained to provide a task for the student. A service dog should not be aggressive or disruptive. Please call DSS if you have any questions. 

Short Breaks

Provided by student. The student requires short breaks from the classroom, usually 5-10 minutes in duration, and is expected to return to class.  

Smart Pen

Provided by DSS or Student. A recording and notetaking device that records the lecture and provides a snapshot of the students notes when written on special paper. 

Transcript of all audio content

Provided by DSS. DSS will request a copy of all audio content so that a transcription can be provided to the student for Section 508 access.

Testing Accommodations

Alternate Testing Location

Provided by DSS.  Outside of the classroom, usually in the DSS testing center, but may in other rooms assigned by DSS across campus.

Private testing space when available

Provided by DSS.  DSS has four private testing rooms. Priority is given to student who require a scribe or use dictation software.

Extended time for exams in DSS office

Provided by DSS/Instructor for online courses.  DSS provides additional time, up to 2.0x, based upon the time given for all students. Online exams must be extended by the instructor. See here for instructions: bitly

Restroom Breaks

Provided by instructor.  Due to disability related reasons, the student may need to step out of the exam for a bio break.

Food or Drink during Exam

Provided by Student.  The student requires food or drink during the exam for medical reasons.

Live Scribe during Exam

Provided by DSS.  The scribe writes down exactly what the student dictates. No other assistance is provided.

Memory Aid

Provided by Instructor Approval.  No longer provided, however, some students may still have this listed as DSS cannot remove an approved accommodation without student’s consent. Please see guidelines here:

Scantron assistance upon completion of exam

Provided by DSS.  DSS will provide scantron assistance upon the completion of the exam for disability-related reasons.

Computer/Word processor for exams

Provided by DSS.  The student requires a keyboard and word processing to have access to the exam. All computers are secure without internet functions.

Braille Exams

Provided by DSS.  The exam will be reformatted into a Braille format. Please upload exams to Titanable within two weeks of the exam date.

Enlarged text exams, specified

Provided by DSS.  The exam will be reformatted to an enlarged font for the student. Please upload exams to Titanable within two weeks of the exam date.

Kurzweil 3000 exams

Provided by DSS. The exam will be reformatted into an accessible format for the Kurweil program to read aloud by the specialized software. Please upload exams to Titanable within two weeks of the exam.

Provided by DSS. A video magnifier is an electronic magnifier that uses a camera and a screen, closed caption TV, to make text easier to read. The camera image will be magnified and the contrast can be increased for individualized accessibility.

Provided by DSS.  All textbooks, course materials and exams will be reformatted into Braille for the student.

Provided by DSS.  All textbooks, course materials and exams will be reformatted so that it can be enlarged electronically or on paper.

Provided by DSS.  All textbooks, course materials and exams will be reformatted into an electronic format so the student can access materials through specialized software that reads aloud.

Clinical Accommodations

Altered clinical schedule

Provided by DSS/Department Supervisor.  Clinical hours may need to be adjusted due to the student’s disability-related needs.

Service dog at clinical site

Provided by student.  Service dogs are permitted in some areas of the clinical rotation as a federal civil right. See more here:

Double time for tutoring

Provided by Tutoring Center.  No longer assigned, although some students may still have it listed as an accommodation - DSS cannot remove an accommodation once it has been assigned without student permission.
