Academic Advising

The department takes seriously its responsibility to advise current students relating to appropriate course work, internship and job opportunities, faculty research opportunities and also to inform them of the resources that are available at the college and university level which will enable them to successfully complete their degree program.

Undergraduate Advising

Students need to meet with an advisor twice a year, typically in the vicinity of course registration. The appointments can be made either by calling the department office at (657) 278 3012 or by signing up on the calendar that is present in the department office (E-100).

If a student has been admitted to CSUF as a transfer student, transcripts are evaluated by the Office of Records and Registration after admission. General Education advising is provided by the Graduation Specialist and contact information may be found on the Student Success Center page. The Titan Degree Audit (TDA) will reflect these credits as Records and Registration processes and evaluates your transcripts. The department office will assist students with transfer credit for courses related to Mathematics, Sciences and Engineering if there is no articulation agreement between previous institution(s) and CSUF.

If a student is currently enrolled in a different major within CSUF and would like to change to a Civil Engineering major, then the student can complete the online Change of Major/Minor form found on the Registration and Records website.

For any semester, the calendar detailing the course registration dates, last day to add/drop classes, and the deadline for withdrawing from a course with a 'W' grade is available on the CSUF admissions site.

The university academic calendar for current academic year is available on Academic Calendar.

Graduate Advising

Every incoming graduate student is required to meet with the Department Chair to select courses for the first semester. It is encouraged for students to develop their study plan in consultation with their graduate advisors. The study plan must consist of a minimum of 30 units of upper-division or graduate-level coursework approved by the advisor, and must be completed with an overall grade-point average of at least 3.0. Additionally, at least half of the units required for the degree must be in approved graduate (500-level) courses. The study plan will be customized to fit the student's background and interests.
