High Impact Practices

High Impact Practices are transformational learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom.

HIPs  provide:

  • Performance expectations at appropriately high levels
  • Significant student engagement by investment of time and effort
  • Meaningful and substantive learning interactions with faculty, staff, students, or external entities
  • Experiences with diversity, complexity, and change
  • Frequent and meaningful feedback
  • Reflective and integrated learning
  • Experiential learning

HIPs bring about meaningful improvements in students’ academic performance, retention rates, and graduation rates. They are powerful tools that transform students' perceptions of themselves and their ability to apply what they learn in the classroom to make a difference in the real world.
