WHY CHOOSE CSUF Counseling

The department provides training to become Clinical Mental Health Counselors in the state of California. Students learn an integrated approach to provide psychotherapy to individuals, groups, and families in non-profit agencies in diverse communities. Students are expected to engage in reflective practice/personal growth, practice cultural competence and sensitivity to all communities, and take responsibility for social change.

Distinctions:

  • The Ánimo: Latinx Counseling Emphasis is one of two public master’s programs in the U.S. accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.
  • Cal State Fullerton is one of two universities in the CSU system with a master’s degree program in clinical mental health counseling that is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.

CAREER PATH

Consider pursuing a master's degree in clinical mental health counseling if you are passionate about approaching the mental health and well-being of individuals of all ages, couples, families, and groups that honors the diverse identities represented in Southern California.

The program prepares graduates from the clinical mental health counseling program at CSUF to seek the Licensed Professional Clinical Counseling (LPCC) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) credentials in California. Many graduates work in the following environments:

  • Clinical mental health community / Non-profit agencies
  • Colleges and universities
