WHY CHOOSE CSUF American Studies

Our American studies students are critical thinkers who are interested in charting the history of the United States through its past and present. In our program, you will expand your understanding of the American experience, and gain invaluable writing and research skills that will prepare you for a variety of jobs after graduation.

In our courses, you’ll read autobiographies, examine movies and television shows as cultural documents, and study visual arts and music from different time periods to understand how Americans have historically experienced such matters as race, gender, humor and religion. Outside of the classroom, you’ll have opportunities to collaborate with faculty experts who specialize in diverse research areas, including true crime, popular culture and Black beauty scholarship.
