What is Disaster Recovery?

Disaster Recovery (DR) is a critical component of CSUF’s Information Security strategy. It ensures that the university can quickly resume mission-critical operations after a cyberattack, natural disaster, or system failure.

DR ensures that critical IT systems and data can be restored quickly after a disruption. This includes planning for natural disasters, cyberattacks, and system failures.

Our DR plans are designed to minimize downtime, protect sensitive data, and maintain continuity of services for students, faculty, and staff.

Why Disaster Recovery Matters?

  • Business Continuity: Ensures essential services remain available during and after a disruption.
  • Data Protection: Safeguards institutional data from loss or corruption.
  • Compliance: Meets CSU and federal requirements for data security and recovery.
  • Risk Mitigation: Reduces the impact of cyber threats, hardware failures, and natural disasters.

Key Components of DR Program

Backup & Restoration

  • Regular backups of critical systems and data
  • Off-site and cloud-based storage solutions
  • Periodic testing of backup integrity

Recovery Planning

  • Documented recovery procedures for all major systems
  • Defined Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)
  • Role-based responsibilities and escalation paths

Testing & Drills

  • Annual disaster recovery exercises
  • Tabletop simulations and live failover testing
  • Continuous improvement based on test outcomes

Security Integration

  • DR plans aligned with cybersecurity protocols
  • Incident response integration for coordinated recovery
  • Secure recovery environments to prevent reinfection

Roles and Responsibilities

  • IT Teams: Execute recovery procedures and maintain infrastructure readiness.
  • Departmental Leads: Ensure local systems and data are included in DR planning.
  • ISO (Information Security Office): Oversees DR policy compliance and risk assessments.
