What is Password Management?

Password Management refers to the practices, tools, and policies used to create, store, and protect passwords that secure access to university systems, services, and data. At CSUF, password management is a critical part of our cybersecurity framework, ensuring that only authorized users can access sensitive resources.

It includes:

  • Creating strong, unique passwords
  • Using password managers
  • Regularly updating passwords
  • Enforcing multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Your CSUF Portal and Student Email Passwords are the same.

Why is Password Management Important?

Passwords are the first line of defense against unauthorized access. Poor password practices can lead to:

  • Account compromise
  • Data breaches
  • Identity theft
  • Unauthorized access to university systems

Effective password management:

  • Protects sensitive student, faculty, and research data
  • Prevents phishing and credential stuffing attacks
  • Supports compliance with CSU and federal security standards
  • Reduces the risk of widespread system compromise
