What is Domain Name System?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a foundational internet service that translates human-readable domain names (like fullerton.edu) into machine-readable IP addresses (like 137.151.127.120).

It can be compared to a phone book, allowing the user to enter a user-friendly name, and returning the address for that name.

At CSUF, DNS ensures that users can reliably access university websites, applications, and services.

Current faculty and staff; system administrators in academic; and administrative departments can request DNS of university and network devices.

Eligibility

Current faculty and staff; system administrators in academic; and administrative departments can request DNS of university and network devices. There is no cost to you or your department to submit a DNS request.

  • DNS changes are reviewed and approved by the Information Security Office
  • DNSSEC is implemented to ensure data integrity and authenticity
  • Access to DNS management is restricted to authorized IT personnel

Getting Started

All DNS requests must be submitted by the IT support for your college or department. All requests and changes must be submitted by a ticket request in ServiceNow. To request DNS-related services, please complete the DNS Request Form or contact the IT Help Desk.

Common requests include:

  • Creating a new subdomain
  • Updating DNS records for a server or service
  • Migrating DNS entries to a new IP or host
