Survey Formatting

  • Download some test data prior to distributing the final survey. Some question formats input the data in slightly non-intuitive ways (for example, each option in a list might be entered is a separate field coded yes or no rather than a single question with one option selected).
  • Take the time to label the items. The question numbering is continuous, and if you are moving, adding, or deleting questions, they may not appear to be in order (for example, the first question is labeled "Question 1" and then you inserted a question after that after working on your survey for some time, so the second question is labeled "Question 48.")
  • Use the page break function in tandem with the skip logic and display logic features to be sure questions appear correctly on the screen. If page breaks are not used sufficiently, some of the skip or display logic may work in an unusual way.
  • If you are not using one of Qualtrics’ templates designated as mobile-compatible, be sure to check the appearance of all survey items on a mobile device (smartphone/tablet).
  • If Qualtrics is exporting unusual values for answer options (for example the first three options listed for a question come out as “190,191,192” rather than “1,2,3”), click the gear symbol in that question and select “recode values” to change to the appropriate values.
