CSUF holds ancestral remains and cultural materials subject to NAGPRA and/or CalNAGPRA in two collections repositories on campus. The items are primarily from southern California and were acquired through intentional excavation, unintentional discovery, or by donation.

Campus Advisory Committee

In 2022, CSUF launched a campus Advisory Committee to provide input and oversight to the repatriation process, including drafting, reviewing, and refining the CSUF repatriation procedures and protocols. In accordance with AB 389, passed in October 2023, CSUF has convened a campus NAGPRA Implementation Committee comprised of CSU and Tribal representatives. This committee will help guide CSUF’s repatriation efforts and procedures. CSUF’s current NAGPRA Implementation Committee includes:

  • Sam Dunlap – Gabrielino/Tongva Nation 
  • Ryan Martin – Morongo Band of Mission Indians 
  • Dr. Alexandro Gradilla – Associate Professor, Chicana and Chicano Studies Department
  • Dr. Edward J. Knell – Professor of Anthropology, Coordinator Archaeology Program
  • Tribal Representative (Federally Recognized): Vacant
  • Tribal Representative (Federally Recognized): Vacant
  • CSU Native American Studies Representative: Vacant
