Profile: Speech & Hearing Clinic

The CSUF Speech and Hearing Clinic has two primary missions: (1) to educate and train graduate students to become future speech-language and hearing professionals by providing the knowledge, skills, and clinical experience needed to become certified and licensed speech-language pathologists and audiologists prepared for the complex and changing demands of the 21st century; and (2) to provide high-quality clinical services to individuals with communication disorders and needs within the surrounding community.

Clinical Services

The Speech and Hearing Clinic evaluates and treats children and adults with a variety of communication disorders from surrounding communities including Orange County, Los Angeles County, Riverside County, and San Bernardino County. During the 2024–2025 academic year, the Clinic served approximately 180 clients across four in-house clinics, and approximately 60–70% of clients were culturally diverse.

Student Training

The Clinic trained, mentored, and graduated 30 master’s degree students to enter the workforce as Speech-Language Pathologists. Approximately 60 graduate students in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders gained hands-on clinical training, completing required practicum hours under supervision and preparing for professional certification and licensure.

Clinic Upgrades & Accessibility

In Fall 2025, the Speech and Hearing Clinic expanded into CP-Suite 100, which now serves as the welcoming new entrance and waiting area for clients and includes a dedicated student assistant front desk, a conference room, and additional staff offices. To improve accessibility and convenience, the clinic now offers eight designated client parking spaces and a ramp leading directly to the Suite 100 entrance, and an ADA-compliant push-button door is scheduled for installation. A renovated room to keep assessment tools and protocols is also planned for the near future.

Events & Engagement

Graduate students from CSUF’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders competed in the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA) Annual College Bowl Competition in March 2025, and the CSUF team placed 2nd. The CSUF National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) Chapter hosted fall 2025 events, including speaker panels featuring Speech-Language Pathologists from surrounding communities. On October 17, 2025, Drs. Terry Saenz and Henriette Langdon presented an interactive workshop for COMD students and SLPs in the community titled “Becoming an Effective Interpreter/Translator in Speech-Language Pathology: Process and Applications.” The Clinic also hosted an Open House on September 9 & 10 to showcase the new space for faculty, administrators, and students.

People Reached

During 2024–2025, the Clinic supported community clients and families through assessment and intervention services, counseling, education, and access to evidence-based care. The Clinic also impacted graduate student clinicians, clinical faculty and supervisors engaged in direct supervision and mentoring, community and educational partners (including local school districts, hospitals, and private clinics), and the broader university community through outreach events, screenings, and awareness initiatives.
