The Abrego Future Scholars Program recognizes high-achieving, first-generation students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to making a difference in their communities. Through financial assistance and a supportive scholar community, the program supports students' academic, personal, and professional growth within an inclusive community. Scholars have opportunitites to develop their leadership skills, engage in community-based activities, and interact with both campus leadership and supporters of the program.

Why should I apply to be an Abrego Future Scholar?

  • Build Meaningful Connections: Become part of a supportive network that encourages connection, collaboration, and continued engagement throughout your time at CSUF. Through staple core events, including Friendsgiving and other scholar activities, you’ll have opportunities to build friendships, connect with peers who share similar goals, and develop relationships that support your college experience. By staying involved, you can strengthen your communication and teamwork skills, learn from others, and build a sense of belonging on campus.
  • Develop Skills for College and Beyond: Take advantage of opportunities designed to strengthen the skills you need to succeed academically and professionally. Through résumé-building workshops, skill-building activities, and connections to campus resources, you can develop time management, communication, problem-solving, and goal-setting skills. These experiences can help you navigate academic challenges, access resources that support your success, and build confidence in pursuing your academic and career goals.
  • Learn Through New Experiences: Expand your perspective through educational field trips, hands-on experiential learning, and opportunities to engage with the broader CSUF campus. These experiences encourage you to explore new interests, adapt to unfamiliar environments, and apply what you learn beyond the classroom. With the Center’s holistic support, you can continue developing your independence, leadership, and critical-thinking skills while discovering new opportunities to grow throughout your college journey.

Abrego Future Scholars Eligibility

  1. Open to high school seniors and incoming transfer students entering CSUF as first-time students
  2. Identify as a First-Generation College Student*
  3. Demonstrate a significant record of community service
  4. Have a minimum weighted 3.0 GPA
  5. Must be a California Resident

*A first-generation college student is defined as someone whose parent(s) have not earned a four-year university degree in the United States.

Benefits

The Abrego Future Scholars Program offers:

  • Access to the Center for Scholars (CFS) provides a range of academic and student support resources designed to help scholars succeed both inside and outside the classroom, including:
    • Free printing services
    • Dedicated CFS staff to help students navigate campus resources
    • Holistic advising that supports students beyond academics
    • Programs and events such as workshops, skillbuilding opportunities, and community-building experiences
    • Special Invitations to attend and support university events.
  • Receive an annual $1,500 scholarship for up to 3 years

All benefits, including the scholarship, are contingent upon meeting program expectations and maintaining active participation each year.

Abrego Future Scholars Scholarship Application Timeline

  • Application Opens: Spring 2027
  • Offers Released: Mid-Summer
