How are Fraternity/Sorority organizations different than any other college organization?

While many student organizations offer opportunities for involvement, fraternities and sororities provide a unique, lifelong membership experience rooted in tradition, values, and close-knit community. Joining a fraternity or sorority can help make the transition to college easier by offering built-in support and a strong sense of belonging. Students often develop lifelong friendships within their chapter (the campus-based branch of an international, national, or regional organization), making a large campus feel smaller and more personal.

What sets fraternities and sororities apart is their combination of social connection, leadership development, academic support, and a commitment to service and philanthropy—all within a values-based community. For many members, their chapter becomes a home away from home and a support system that extends well beyond graduation.

Will my student’s academics be compromised if they join a chapter?

Academics are a top priority in Fraternity and Sorority Life. When students join, they become part of a community that values academic success and provides a built-in support system. Most chapters have a scholarship chair or new member educator who offers programs to encourage strong academic performance. In addition, students have access to campus resources such as learning centers, workshops, and academic advisors. Fraternity and sorority members at CSUF have consistently maintained a higher GPA than the overall student body. Chapters also have minimum GPA requirements for membership, and if a student falls below that threshold, the chapter provides support to help them get back on track.

How much time does Fraternity and Sorority Life membership require?

Time commitments vary by chapter, but the first semester typically involves a more intensive schedule due to new member education programs. During this time, your student will develop leadership and time management skills, build friendships, and learn about the organization’s history. After initiation, weekly chapter meetings and required events—such as philanthropies, service projects, and social functions—are planned in advance to help members manage their schedules.

What are the costs associated with being a member?

Membership costs vary by organization. Most chapters offer payment plans, and some provide scholarships to help offset expenses. These dues go toward programming, events, and services that enhance the member experience. We encourage students to ask for financial details during the recruitment process, as costs differ from chapter to chapter.

Will my student be hazed?

California State University, Fullerton has a zero-tolerance policy for hazing. Student Life and Leadership actively educates students on how to recognize and report hazing. All student organizations must fully comply with university policy and California State Penal Code Section 245.6, which defines hazing as any initiation or pre-initiation activity likely to cause serious bodily injury. CSUF is committed to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all students.
