About The Quad Squad

The Quad Squad is comprised of Student Affairs and Strategic Enrollment Management professional staff members, led and trained by Student Life & Leadership, who monitor outdoor free speech activities coordinated by students, registered student organizations, and campus visitors. It was granted the name of “Quad Squad” since many of the activities happen in the Central Quad.

The Quad Squad can be easily recognized by their bright orange visors labeled “Quad Squad,” official lanyards, and optional windbreakers.

Designated Quad Squad areas will be clearly marked with Free Speech signage surrounding the space.

What does hateful speech sound like?

Speech that offends or insults groups based on race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or other traits. They are words that are hurtful, emotionally harmful, and psychologically stunning.

Is speech expressing hateful feelings legal?

The CSU as a governmental entity is prohibited by the First Amendment and the California Constitution from restricting speech simply because it is hateful.

CSU Time, Place and Manner

The Constitutional guarantee of speech free from government restraint, does not preclude reasonable restrictions unrelated to content; SCOTUS recognizes in its opinions that the constitutional guarantee is not absolute. 

Time, place and manner restrictions are content-neutral limitations imposed by the University on expressive activity.

CSUF Amplified Sound Policy

“Amplified sound” is any sound enhanced through any device however powered that magnifies sound, including but not limited to microphones, cell phones, bull horns and megaphones. 

The use of amplified sound during an activity may only occur from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm. Any use may not impede with any previously scheduled event. 

The use of amplified sound may only occur in the following locations: Becker Amphitheatre, the Main Quad, and the Humanities and Social Sciences Quad. 

Sound Exemption Request Form

The form above can grant exceptions and approval to use amplified sounds outside the 12-1pm hour. However, use of amplified sound cannot impede or disrupt the regular or essential operations of the University.

CSUF Fire Lanes

Fire Lanes must be maintained clear and free of obstructions at all times. Vehicle staging or parking in or on the Fire Lanes is not permitted.
