Tuffy Awards

About

The Office of Student Life & Leadership every Spring semester hosts the annual Tuffy Awards. The Student Organization Recognition Celebration will be hosted in-person on Thursday, May 9th in the TSU Pavilions.

Tuffy Awards is sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and the Student Success Initiative.


Awards & Criteria

Tuffy Awards is a time for everyone to come together to recognize the virtual contributions of student organizations to CSUF and the Titan Community. Please help us celebrate another outstanding year by nominating an individual or student organization. Nominations for the Spring 2024 Tuffy Awards are now open! Submit a nomination form here

There are three ways to submit a nomination form this year. These options will be selectable within the nomination form: 

  1. Respond to questions in written (typed) format.
  2. Respond to questions in an in-person presentation style format.
  3. Respond to questions in a 2 - 5 minute video.

Nominations are due by 5:00 PM on Friday, April 19th.

Individual Awards

Advisor of the Year

This award recognizes a faculty or staff advisor of a student organization who has had a positive impact on the student organization and who has demonstrated a strong ability to cultivate learning and growth in student leaders. Nominees for this award must serve as Faculty/Staff Advisor(s) for a recognized organization registered with Student Life & Leadership. 

Eligibility: 

  • The nominees must have also completed Advisor Training with ETC.. 
  • Nominees must have served as advisor for the entire 2023 - 2024 academic year.
  • Nominees cannot be a member of Student Life & Leadership.

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Guided and supported the organization and its members.
  • Exemplified strong leadership characteristics.
  • Supported the organization in meeting a need on campus.

 

Outstanding Advocate of the Year

This award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the development of the academic, professional, and/or personal lives of students and staff at CSUF. CSUF faculty, staff, and students may be nominated for the award.

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Commitment to the campus community
  • Positively represented the campus community
  • Supported the mission of the University
  • Advocated for students, staff, and/or faculty or an organization on campus
  • Met or addressed a need on or off campus
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities (conflict management, leadership transitions, time management, event management, planning, etc.)

 

President of the Year

This award recognizes an outstanding individual who advanced the mission of their student organization while challenging and encouraging members to execute initiatives, acquire skills, and prepared the group for leadership transition and ongoing success. 

Eligibility: 

  • Award recipient must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA 

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Commitment to the campus community.
  • Created positive networks with other student organizations and campus departments.
  • Promoted organization goals and mission.
  • Positively represented the campus community.
  • Supported the mission of the University.
  • Advocated for members and/or the organization
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities (conflict management, leadership transitions, time management, event management, planning, etc.)
  • Pursued growth and development opportunities.
  • Demonstrated membership inclusivity.
  • Recruitment and retention efforts.

 

Member of the Year

This award  recognizes a student that was a member of the organization during the 2023 - 2024 academic year. This individual is being recognized for their immediate impact on supporting the organization’s goals and objectives. 

Eligibility:

  • The nominee cannot be a student officer. 

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Positively represented the organization
  • Demonstrated dedication to the growth and success of the organization and its mission
  • Pursued growth and development opportunities
  • Took the initiative to increase engagement with the org and/or events
  • Demonstrated membership inclusivity

 

Titans Leaving their Legacies

This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to their organization, and was instrumental in creating a positive impact on the campus community. 

Eligibility: 

  • Nominees must have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • Self-nominated individuals will need to submit a professional or on-campus reference in order to be eligible for this award.
  • Nominee must have graduated in Fall 2023, Spring 2024, or Summer 2024.

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Implemented a new program.
  • Helped create positive change within an organization or on campus.
  • Advocated for funding.
  • Demonstrated successful campus advocacy.
  • Collaborated with other individuals, organizations, and/or campus departments.
  • Obtained accolades and achievements.

Group Awards

Alumni Engagement Award

This award is intended to acknowledge student organizations that have made an effort to maintain and develop relationships with alumni, and fostered a sense of Titan Pride to encourage their members to become active alumni. The recipient of this award will be invited to collaborate with the Office of Alumni Engagement to host a meeting or event at the Golleher Alumni House for their organization in the 2024-2025 academic year.

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Organizing one or more engagement opportunities with CSUF alumni.
  • Direct communication/outreach to CSUF alumni to participate in events and programs. - Connecting current members with CSUF alumni.
  • Enhancing the Titan Experience at CSUF to encourage students to stay connected after graduating.
  • Developing a culture of giving back to the CSUF community.

 

Student Organization of the Year

This award recognizes an organization in good standing with the University that has demonstrated outstanding achievement and organizational development compared to other student organizations on campus. 

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the campus community.
  • Successfully member recruitment and retention.
  • Demonstrated membership inclusivity.
  • Participated in diversity training (e.g., ally training, conferences, etc.)
  • Showed a significant effort to further the organization’s mission (through flexibility, collaboration, creativity, initiative).
  • Supports the mission of the University.
  • Leadership opportunities within the organization.
  • On or off-campus accolades and achievements.
  • Off-campus community impact.

 

Emergent Organization of the Year

This award recognizes a student organization that has been active on campus for less than two years. In a short time, the organization has demonstrated exemplary effort to enhance the Titan community. Organizations involved in conduct-related absences do not qualify for this award.

Eligibility:

  • Organization must have been active for less than two years.
  • Organizations involved in conduct-related absences do not qualify for this award.

Things to consider including in your submission:

  • Organization grew in membership
  • Executed successful programs and services
  • Positively contributed to the campus community
  • Achieved organization goals and objectives
  • Demonstrated effective organization planning (strategic, retreats, events, etc.) 
  • Addressed or met a need on or off campus
  • Received off-campus accolades and recognition
  • Pursued growth and development opportunities

 

Titans In Action

This award recognizes an outstanding organization that positively contributed to CSUF and the community. 

Eligibility: 

  • Nominees must have community service hours listed in TitanLink. 

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Positive impact to CSUF Positive impact to community.
  • Positive impact to the organization and its members.
  • Participated in civic engagement activities.
  • Addressed or met a need on campus or in the local community.
  • Volunteered to support a group or cause on campus or in the community.
  • Fundraised to support the organization or a cause on campus.
  • Demonstrated community advocacy.
  • Supported the organization and CSUF community through leadership development opportunities.

 

Collaborative Program of the Year

This award recognizes an organization that collaborated with at least one other recognized club/organization, department on campus, or community agency to host a program on campus.

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Program made a positive contribution to the University
  • Was successful in regards to attendance/participation
  • Was implemented with careful planning and work divided among all partners
  • Achieved its stated intended outcomes


Outstanding Program in Member Development

This award recognizes an organization that provides an opportunity for members to experience personal and/or professional development.

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Program positively impacted the organization and its members.
  • Program allowed members to practice leadership, teamwork, group effort, and organizational skills.
  • Program contributed to goals and objectives.
  • Program provided learning opportunities to its members.
  • Program had successful attendance/participation.

 

Outstanding Program in Academia

This award recognizes a student organization that planned an outstanding educational program during the current academic year. The educational program benefited its participants in their academic or professional pursuits or created awareness around a specific topic/subject.

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Program enriched the academic environment through collaborative learning
  • Program had successful attendance and participation
  • Hosting the program was relevant to the organization’s mission
  • Program contributed to campus pride and community building
  • Participation/collaboration with an academic unit or program.

 

Outstanding Program in Diversity and Inclusion

This award recognizes a student organization’s program that highlighted or supported diversity and inclusion. The program also shaped or positively affected the meaning and understanding of diversity and inclusion on campus.

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Educated the campus community about diversity, equity, and/or inclusion issues through program objectives.
  • Successful attendance and participation.
  • Program was relevant to the organization’s mission.
  • Program demonstrated successful student leadership and collaboration with campus departments.
  • Contributed to creating a safe and welcoming environment and culture for our Titans.
  • Fulfilled a unique need on campus or in the community.

 

Outstanding Program in Health and Wellness

This award recognizes a student organization that has coordinated an initiative, event, or series of events promoting mental, physical, spiritual, or other forms of health and wellness.

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Effectively raises awareness of challenges in the areas of physical and mental health, recovery and support, and other circumstances that impede student well-being at CSUF.
  • Fosters a community of care and education that supports and is inclusive for all CSUF students.

 

Program of the Year

Nominees for this award must be a recognized organization that is registered with Student Life & Leadership. 

 

Tuffy Innovation Award

This award recognizes a student organization with tremendous creativity and originality in ‘’thinking outside the box’’. This award celebrates a student organization prioritizing creativity and innovation by enhancing an existing project or initiative. This could include programming, membership recruitment, or creative marketing.

Things to consider in your submission:

  • Evidence is provided to support significant changes, modifications, or approaches to an innovative process or procedure that enhanced the effective functioning of the program, recruitment strategy, or creative marketing.
  • Collaborated with other organizations or campus departments that helped meet the organization’s innovation goals.
  • Evidence to support how the enhanced initiative positively impacted the CSUF community and/or the organization and its members.

Student Org Performances

Student Life and Leadership is thrilled to announce the Student Org Performance Contest for this year! We invite all interested organizations to showcase their talents at Tuffy Awards.

Here's how it works:

  • Participating organizations will submit the Tuffy Awards Performances Qualtrics Form below to express their level of participation at Tuffy Awards.

    ● Participation in the contest is entirely optional! If your organization wishes to perform at Tuffy Awards but prefers not to include their performance in the contest, that's perfectly fine!

    ● If you wish for your organization’s performance to be considered for the contest, please make sure to indicate your organization’s level of participation in the Qualtrics form below.

    ● A popular vote from the audience will determine the contest winner. The winning organization will be announced near the end of the ceremony.
