All U-RISE Scholars are expected to satisfy the following:
- All U-RISE Program participants can only be supported by one federal grant, which for U-RISE, it is the National Institutes of Health (NIH). If accepted as a U-RISE Scholar, the scholar needs to relinquish any current participation in another federally-funded undergraduate research training program on campus if the scholar is receiving a stipend or other substantial financial support from the other program (e.g. CHERP, McNair, NAARE, LSAMP, and M-STEM)
- Work with a faculty mentor for an average of 20 hours per week during each semester of the academic year and full-time for ten weeks during the summer months (unless the scholar is participating in the external summer research experience [SRE] program)
- Participate in the Summer Workshop (Session A) to introduce and prepare all scholars to the academic, research, and professional aspects of the U-RISE program
- Design and carry out a two-year plan for courses that enhance and support research objectives and future graduate school plans
- Enroll and participate in BIOL 480U (U-RISE Pro-Seminar, 4 semesters, 1 unit) and meet all responsibilities in a timely manner each semester
- Enroll and participate in ENGL 363 (Scientific Writing, 1 semester, 3 units) during the first year in the program, and meet all responsibilities in a timely manner. This requirement may be waived if you have taken ENGL 301 previously.
- Enroll in at least one unit of 499L (Independent Research, 4 semesters) or equivalent course in the scholar's respective department each semester
- Enroll in one unit of BIOL 498 (Senior Thesis, 2 semesters, 1 unit) and meet all responsibilities in a timely manner each semester
- Maintain a standard of good academic performance (3.0 GPA or higher) every semester
- Present the results of the thesis project at local and/or national conferences
- Apply to and if accepted, attend a SRE program at a PhD-granting institution
- Apply to PhD or MD-PhD programs during the last year in the program
- Apply to Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) during the last spring in the program, if not accepted to graduate school
- Be a role model for other students in your department, college, and the university, and support all U-RISE scholars in their endeavors
- Complete and submit a written thesis document, as well as defend the thesis project by the last semester in the program
