1964

  • The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 was implemented in response to Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty
  • This act led to the establishment of an experimental program known as Upward Bound

 

1965-1968

  • The Higher Education Act of 1965 was implemented
  • This act led to the establishment of the Educational Talent Search in 1965 and the Special Services for Disadvantaged Students (later known as Student Support Services) in 1968
  • These two programs with Upward Bound became TRIO

1969 - 1990

  • Educational Opportunity Centers and Veterans Upward Bound were added in 1972
  • Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program was established 1986
  • Upward Bound Math/Science started in 1990

1992

  • The California State University, Fullerton Upward Bound Program received funding to serve the Santa Ana area
  • Over the course of years, CSUF Upward Bound began to serve four high schools and to serve a total of 90 students
    • Century High School
    • Saddleback High School
    • Santa Ana High School
    • Valley High School

2017

  • CSUF Upward Bound received funding to serve an additional 62 students at Savanna High School in the Anaheim, California area and Fullerton Union High School in the Fullerton, California area

2022

  • CSUF Upward Bound was refunded to serve students until 2027
  • CSUF Upward bound was refunded to serve Century High School, Saddleback High School, Santa Ana High School, and Valley High School in the Santa Ana, California area, and Savanna High School, and a new site, Magnolia High School in the Anaheim, California area

Now

  • CSUF Upward Bound has had more than 500 program alumni 
  • Program alumni have attended various four-year higher education institutions throughout California including: UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, UCM, UCR, UC Berkeley, Stanford, SFSU, CSUDH, CSULA, CSUF, and many more
  • Many program alumni have returned to their communities to serve as advocates and mentors to young students
