Shadows

The effective use of shadows and really make something stand out, or even fall in, and when done right draws immediate attention to the content.  Remember with this or any style, a little goes a very long way.

This uses a background-white without a border so you can see what the shadows are doing. 

You could really push the effect using a border so try things and see how it looks.

Its best to have some kind of difference for your shadow to be around otherwise it might look odd that the background has this random shadow around it.

Text Shadow

If you have text over an image and it seems hard to read you can try a text shadow.

When you have text over an image but need to reduce the automatic darken that happens, this can help make text more readable.
