WU Grades

According to Executive Order No. 1037, a "WU" is given when a student has not completed sufficient course assignments or participated in sufficient course activity to make it possible, in the opinion of the instructor, to report satisfactory or unsatisfactory completion of the class by use of the letter grade (A-F). For purpose of GPA calculation, a "WU" is equivalent to an "F". For more information please refer to the 2009-2011 University Catalog, page 75.

Retroactive Withdrawal Petition

Students may petition for certain university academic regulations when unusual circumstances exist. Unusual circumstances refer to extraordinary events beyond the student’s control which affected his/her academic performance. Grades eligible for this type of petition include WU, U, NC*, I, IC or I grade converted to F. Retroactive withdrawal petitions must be filed within 30 days after the first day of class of the following semester.

Students must provide independent documentation (from a source other than the student) to support the extenuating and compelling reasons that affected their academic performance. It is important to keep in mind that it can take up to six months from the time Admissions and Records (A&R) receives all supporting documentation for them determine if the petition is going to be granted or denied.

If the retroactive withdrawal petition is granted, the "WU” or “IC” grades included in the petition will be removed from the GPA calculation and replaced with "W’s", which do not affect a student's GPA. The end result is a higher GPA because the failing grades are deleted from the GPA calculation.
