Repetition of Courses

Students may repeat courses for which a C- or lower was earned.
The following rules apply when considering repeating a course:
 |
Any course taken at CSUF must be retaken at CSUF in order
to replace the grade in GPA calculations. |
 |
| There is a maximum of 16 units allowed for course repetition
with grade replacement. |
- Repetition of the same class accumulates units toward
the 16-unit maximum.
- Courses repeated at other institutions before transferring
to CSUF count toward the 16-unit maximum.
|
 |
In cases of repetition beyond the 16-unit limit, grades are
"averaged" in calculating the GPA. |
 |
When a course is repeated, only the most recent grade shall
be used in computing the GPA for the first 16 units. |
 |
Students repeating courses should file a "Student Record
Inquiry" form a few weeks before the end of the semester.
The Student Record Inquiry form is available in the Admission
& Records Service Center (LH-114) or the Academic Advisement
Center (UH 123). Failure to file this form will delay the replacement
of the grade in the GPA calculations until the grad check is
completed. |
Frequently Asked Questions About the Repetition of Course Policy
(ROCP)
How many classes can I repeat for better
grades?
Under the ROCP, a student may repeat up to a maximum of 16 units
of C- or lower for better grades. Courses taken and repeated at
other institutions count towards this total. The grades for any
courses repeated beyond the 16 units will not replace previous D's,
F's or WU's. They will be "averaged" in calculating your
GPA. Note: If the same class is repeated more than once, each repetition
adds to the total.
If I received a C- or lower in a course
taken at CSUF, do I have to repeat it at CSUF or can I repeat it
at a community college or another university?
Any course taken at CSUF must be repeated at CSUF in order to replace
the poor grade in the GPA calculation. Any course taken at CSUF
and repeated at a different institution will be averaged when calculating
the GPA.
Must I repeat a class the very next semester
or with the same instructor to use the ROCP?
No. The class does not have to be repeated in the next term or with
the same instructor. The class must have the same course name and
number (e.g. ENGL 101) in order to apply ROCP. Sometimes courses
are renumbered (e.g. SOCI 451 changed to 351 in Fall 2001). ROCP
may be applied in these cases.
I've repeated a class for a better grade
to improve my GPA. Is the change made automatically?
Not necessarily. Admissions & Records does not automatically
apply ROCP until the Grad Check is processed. To have the GPA recalculated
using ROCP, students should submit the "Student Record Inquiry"
form a few weeks before the end of the semester the course is repeated.
The form is available in the Admissions & Records Service Center
(LH 114) or the Academic Advisement Center (UH 123).
