PROGRAMS & EVENTS

Basic Needs Services offers several presentations, trainings and programs for CSUF students, faculty and staff to help support students’ Titan Experience. Information about programs offered for students, trainings for faculty and staff, and how to request presentations can be found below. To request a presentation or training, please submit a Basic Needs Services Presentation and Training Request form. For questions, please contact basicneeds@fullerton.edu.

CALFRESH PROGRAMS AND EVENTS

These programs help students learn about CalFresh benefits and how they can benefit them.

Students can participate in CalFresh Outreach and Enrollment Day events each semester where they can apply for CalFresh benefits in-person with County of Orange Social Services Agency. More information about these events can be found here.

BASIC NEEDS AMBASSADOR SEMINAR & TRAINING 

These trainings focus on basic needs insecurity issues facing college students, how to empathetically support CSUF students with appropriate boundaries, and available on and off campus resources for support.

*The Basic Needs Ambassador Seminar is specifically for undergraduate and graduate students.

*The Basic Needs Ambassador Training is specifically for faculty and staff through the FDC or upon request.

Presentations

  • Basic Needs Services Overview (30 minutes)
    This presentation provides an overview of Basic Needs Services, including information about services and forms of assistance (including food, temporary housing, and financial) and how students can access support.

Trainings

  • Basic Needs Ambassador Training (90 minutes for faculty and staff)
    This training for faculty and staff examines current trends related to food, housing, and financial insecurity, and how to empathetically support students experiencing a basic needs insecurity with appropriate boundaries. Participants will also gain knowledge and skills that facilitate connecting students with on and off-campus resources.
  • Basic Needs Ambassador Seminar (60 minutes for students)
    This seminar for students (undergraduate and graduate) focuses on basic needs insecurity issues facing college students, how to support their peers, and available on- and off-campus resources for Titans to access.
  • Titan Bites Adminstrator Training (30 minutes for faculty and staff)
    This training is for faculty and staff who would like to become approved administrators to send Titan Bites alerts through the iFullerton app. Titan Bites is a free food program that invites students to be an after-event guest when a campus catered event is over and food is available. Please note graduate and undergraduate student staff are ineligible to send Titan Bites alerts.

CalFresh Programs:

  • Get Fresh with CalFresh (60 minutes)
    This program explores CalFresh benefits, how students may be eligible, and provides and overview of how to apply individually or with Basic Needs Services support. CalFresh is a nutrition assistance program that can help students and households purchase more nutritious, healthy foods.
  • (Cal)Fresh Facts (60 minutes)
    This program explores common myths and stigmas associated with CalFresh benefits. Attendees will examine food insecurity, demystify common CalFresh myths, and discuss how CalFresh can benefit themselves and other CSUF students. 

Financial Literacy Programs:

  • Let's Get Financially Fit (60 minutes)
    This program provides an introduction to financial literacy and wellness, what impacts financial well-being, and tips on how to start building healthy money management practices to strengthen their financial wellness.
  • Budgeting Your Semester (60 minutes) 
    This program helps students learn how to create a budget for a semester with a student lifestyle in mind. Attendees will review budget basics, how to create a personalized money-management system, and how to stay motivated while improving their financial wellness.
  • Understanding Credit (60 minutes) 
    This program provides an overview of credit and how it can impact students now and in the future. Attendees will learn about credit basics including credit scores, how to build and maintain credit, and strategies to maintain good credit.
  • Managing Debt (60 minutes) 
    This program is an introduction for students to debt management, including different types of debt, how to manage existing debt, and strategies to repay debt.
  • Apartment Hunting 101 (60 minutes) 
    This program helps students interested in living off-campus learn strategies for apartment searching. Attendess will learn how to develop a budget for apartments, identify strategies to find listings, and how to secure an apartment.
  • Stretching Your Grocery Budget (60 minutes) 
    This program focuses on various grocery shopping strategies to jhelp students learn ways to make grocery shopping less stressful, more budget friendly, and to create more access to nutritious, healthy foods.

Basic Needs Ambassador Training

Total Time: 1.5 hours

The Basic Needs Ambassador Training examines current trends realted to food, housing, and financial insecurity, relevant cultural considerations, and recognition of boundaries necessary for working with students who experience basic needs insecurity. Participants will gain knowledge and skills that facilitate connecting students with resources.
