Carid ad Svich’s “The House of the Spirits” is a poetic adaptation of Chilean author Isabel Allende’s haunting novel centered on the women of the Trueba family as they rise from rags to riches in the shadow of social and political turmoil. Infused with magical realism and spanning four generations, this darkly poetic story is both a universal family drama and a lesson in Chilean history as seen through the eyes of powerful women. Winner of the 2009 HOLA Outstanding Achievement in Playwriting award and the 2011 Primus Prize American Theatre Critics Association award.

Please be advised this play makes references and allusions to real events that occurred in Chile from the 1920s to the 1970s. Some of these may be striking, off-putting, or uncomfortable for some people. The play has numerous depictions, references to, and discussion of torture, rape, militaristic and police violence, as well as violence and sexual assault of a variety of degrees.
