What Causes Mold to Grow

Mold is natural

Mold plays a role in breaking down leaves, trees, and other outdoor organic materials.

Spores are everywhere

Mold spores are microscopic and float in the air both outdoors and indoors, you can’t see them.

Spores enter buildings easily

They come inside on clothing, shoes, backpacks, and through open doors or windows.

You can't eliminate all mold indoors

Because spores are always present, the goal is to  control moisture  not eliminate mold entirely.

Especially in hot, humid weather or when many people share a space, moisture can build up quickly.

Indoor materials can support mold

Mold can grow on wood, paper, carpet, food, insulation, ceiling tiles, clothing, and painted walls if moisture and oxygen are present.

Mold Prevention Tips!

Keep airflow clear

Do not block window units, vents, or air conditioners with furniture, clothing, or bags. Proper air circulation is essential.

Keep room doors closed

This helps prevent humid air from entering your space from hallways or the outdoors.

Leave all vents open and unobstructed

Blocking vents interferes with airflow and increases the risk of mold.

Don’t overpack closets or storage areas

Tightly packed spaces restrict airflow, creating conditions that support mold growth.

Clean regularly
  1. Vacuum floors
  2. Wipe down surfaces
  3. Clean up spills promptly
  4. Empty and clean refrigerators
  5. Take out trash and recycling frequently
  6. Clean your bathroom weekly, use bathroom cleaner and disinfectant to scrub sinks, tubs, shower stalls, and floors.  If you're in an apartment/Suite, you're responsible for your own bathroom.
Avoid storing damp items

Do not place wet clothes or towels in closets, drawers, or bins for long periods mold thrives in moist, enclosed spaces.

Store food in sealed containers

Open or exposed food can encourage mold.

Remove indoor plants

Wet soil introduces extra moisture into the air.

Take shorter hot showers

Long showers create steam and raise humidity levels, increasing the chance of mold growth.

Keep windows closed & Air out Room

Outdoor humidity can enter and raise moisture levels inside, promoting mold growth.
