Dreams Encouraged: The Nations Very First Transformative Housing Initiative for Formerly Incarcerated People
11:00 am - 12:00 pm
PLN-130

Hosted by Project Rebound & the Office of the Provost

The John Irwin House (JIH) took a qualitative approach to create a conversation on how the nation's first transformative housing initiative for formerly incarcerated people seeking higher education is closing the gap by using education for healing, redemption, and personal and professional growth. Sergio Torres, M.S., guided the current residents of the JIH to create a list of questions that reflect this year's themes of social justice and restorative practices. The eight residents were split up into pairs and asked to make 3-5 questions about how the JIH is helping them achieve living securely compared to those that are subject to insecurity, the distances that exist between the inside and outside, and the gap between higher education in prison and higher education outside of prison. The top questions that reflect this year's theme were picked anonymously without the residents knowing. The residents were interviewed individually, and Sergio transcribed and coded each interview. The data that was found by taking a qualitative approach will be our guiding talking points for our reflective panel style conversation, directed by Sergio, that will allow the JIH residents to share about how they use higher education to access resources, build a career, and live and heal in a safe transformative community.
