Telecommunications Infrastructure Initiative

The Telecommunications Infrastructure Initiative (or TII) project is a construction project involving the upgrade of campus wiring and its environment (collectively called the infrastructure) in order to support the higher speeds that new technology demands.

What is the TII Project?

Specifically, the TII (or infrastructure) project will be upgrading the campus wiring by adding a high performance “Category 6” type cable to each existing outlet. This Cat 6 cable is the latest approved cabling industry standard. It offers twice as much bandwidth than our present category 5 cable. This will make it possible to boost the speed at which information is sent and received by your computer. The project will also involve updating the communication rooms (also known as telephone closets) across campus. These communication rooms connect your computer via wires to switches and hubs that make it possible for you to connect with both on campus and off campus information. Modern-day data communications equipment requires special environmental controls such as temperature and air flow. The new cabling is also being re-terminated on new racks thus eliminating cable clutter in the communications room.

How will this project affect me?

It will be necessary to visit every campus workstation at least twice during this project in order to upgrade the cabling connecting the workstation to the campus network. You will receive advance notice before your workstation will be visited. Much of the work is being done during the evening hours when the campus is closed, so the impact will be minimal.

How long will the project take?

It is estimated that the project will take eighteen months starting in October 2004.

When will this work happen?

Work is scheduled to happen between the hours of 10pm and 7am in order to minimize the impact on the occupants of a building.

What do I need to do?

When you have been informed that your building has been scheduled, you will receive instructions on preparations such as removing your personal items and other materials that may hinder access to the data jacks in your office. You may also want to secure any items that may break when furniture is moved in order to get to the jacks.
