Student Genius Corner (SGC)

In our continued effort to bring student services under the same umbrella, Information and Learning Commons (ILC) has created the Student Genius Corner (SGC) located in the Pollak Library, Titan Lab, PLN-030 (basement north).

• Testing center: The student testing center allows students to take tests for certain courses that they are enrolled in. Eligibility for online tests is determined by the professor.

Student Long Term Laptop Checkout

Who can check out long term laptops:

For the pilot launch, students who are taking a class that uses the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) will be eligible to check out the laptops. The VCL allows CSUF students to access university-licensed computer applications via the Internet.  To check out a long term laptop, the instructor will need to email  SGC@fullerton.edu with the student(s) name, CWID, and course name.

Laptop checkout criteria:

1. Valid TitanCard is required.
2. Laptops may be checked out for a longer term.  Late fees of $25 per day will be applied for failure to return the laptop by the due date.
3. By checking out a laptop for a longer term you will be responsible for the equipment being loaned out to you.  Any loss of equipment, damages, or theft will result in a $250 fine.
4. The laptop is installed with Windows XP, Microsoft Office 2007, and Adobe Acrobat X Professional. Students may install their own personal software if they wish to.

Computer Lab Reservation for Student Events

Limited computer lab reservations for campus-wide events are provided. Couple examples are New Student Orientation (NSO) program and Collegiate Learning Assessment. To find out if we can accommodate your space request, please email SGC@fullerton.edu.

Smart Classroom Replication

A mock environment for smart classrooms is located in PLN-111. The room is equipped with a lectern and equipment used in smart classrooms. Please visit the ILC Support Desk on the first floor of Pollak Library North for reservation information.

Install security software and keep it up-to-date:

Installing security software and keeping it up-to-date is the most important thing that you can do to keep your computer safe from potential security threats. Security software protects your computer against viruses and spyware. Below is a list of free and reliable security software which you can use to keep your computers protected:

Free Anti-Virus:

Free Internet Security software:
McAfee Site Advisor: This is a free add-on to your browser which can warn you whether the site you are about to visit is safe.

Maintain current software and updates:

Avoid Threats to your computers:

Here are some practices that you should follow to avoid threats to your computer

• Never share passwords and passphrases
• Do not click random links
• Beware of email or attachment from unknown people
• Do not download unfamiliar software
• Do not propagate virus hoaxes or chain mail
• Log out of or lock your computer when stepping away, even for a moment
• Remove unnecessary programs or services from your computer
• Frequently back up important documents and files
• Treat sensitive data very carefully
• Remove data securely

Laptop Security Software

CSUF Information Technology is providing FrontDoor Software Laptop Loss and Recovery, a program that allows you to remotely lock, alarm, and track your laptop in case of theft. It uses GPS tracking that only you can access. You can find more details about the features and security on their website.
