Academic Internships (CHEM 490)

 

An academic internship with a qualifying industrial partner can be a rewarding way to gain experience working in an industrial laboratory setting.  Provided the internship is scientifically rigorous and directly related to chemistry or biochemistry, it can be used to gain up to 3 units of CHEM 490 (Internship) credit that replaces the 3 units of CHEM 495 (Research) required for graduation.

WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR CHEM 490 CREDIT?

Students seeking academic credit for an internship will do the following at least two full semesters prior to graduation:

  • Apply for and obtain an internship (see “How Do I Find an Academic Internship” below)
  • Obtain a permit to enroll in CHEM 490 prior to beginning the internship
  • Register with the CSUF Center for Internships and Community EngagementOpens in new window and have the host location approved via the faculty internship coordinator
  • Complete a minimum of 90 hours of internship work per unit of academic credit in CHEM 490
    Meet with other interns and the faculty internship coordinator a minimum of 4 times during each semester enrolled in CHEM 490
  • Complete a technical paper and technical presentation on internship activities each semester enrolled in CHEM 490
