Welcome to Project SHINE at Cal State Fullerton Project SHINE is a national service-learning initiative that began at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, to build partnerships among community colleges, universities and community-based organizations to benefit older immigrants, refugees and college students. Project SHINE at Cal State Fullerton began in 2001. More than 800 students have provided over 15,000 hours of service working with more than 2,000 senior immigrants in north Orange County! Project SHINE links college students with immigrants who seek to learn English as a second language, increase their participation in the community and/or become U.S. citizens. As part of a service-learning course or as volunteers, the college students assist immigrants in a variety of ways, including teaching English, teaching citizenship, providing them with written histories in their native language and serving as conversation partners.
