You are considered INDEPENDENT if you:

    1. Will be at least 24 years of age by December 31 in the application year (for example, December 31, 2008 for the 08-09 school year).
    2. An orphan, ward of the court, or both of your parents are deceased.
    3. A veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.
    4. A student with legal dependents other than a spouse.
    5. A graduate student.
    6. Married at the time you sign your FAFSA.
    7. Currently on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training.
