Tips for Completing the FAFSA
Horizontal Rule

TIP 1
Apply for a Federal PIN. If you are dependent, your parent should also apply for a Federal PIN. This will allow you to sign your application electronically and you’ll be able to make corrections and track your FAFSA online. You can apply for your PIN any time so it’s available when you’re ready to complete your FAFSA.

TIP 2
Complete and submit your FAFSA by March 2 for the following academic year. Do not wait to find out if you have been admitted! And do not wait until your/your parent’s taxes are filed. You may estimate income and tax information on the FAFSA and correct the figures later if necessary. March 2 is the Cal Grant application deadline as well as the priority filing date for certain types of aid, including Federal Work Study, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant and State University Grant.

TIP 3
File electronically at FAFSA on the Web. It’s faster, it’s easier, and it’s more user-friendly than the paper application. Complete the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet first and you’ll sail through the process! You’ll need to gather these documents in order to complete either the worksheet or paper FAFSA:

  • Your Social Security card and driver's license
  • W-2 forms or other records of income earned
  • Your (and your spouse's, if you are married) Federal Income Tax return
  • Your parents' Federal Income Tax Return, if you are a dependent student
Records of other untaxed income received such as welfare benefits, social security benefits, AFDC (or TANF) or ADC, veteran's benefits, disability, or military or clergy allowances
  • Current bank statements and records of stocks, bonds and other investments
Business or farm records, if applicable
  • Your alien registration card (if you are not a U.S. citizen)

TIP 4
When filing your FAFSA, avoid processing delays by:

  • Filing on time (by March 2)
  • Using accurate information
  • Following FAFSA instructions carefully
  • Providing your e-mail address on the FAFSA
  • Monitoring your status and complying quickly to any requests for additional information
