How to Get a Federal Direct Stafford Loan

• Submit FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov)

• Provide any requested documentation to office of Financial Aid

• Review your financial aid award summary in TITAN Online and click on the “Federal Direct Stafford” name for complete details on how to accept the loan.

• If you are borrowing for the first time, complete loan entrance counseling. Your loan will not be processed if pre-loan counseling is not complete.

• Complete master promissory note (mpn) at http://www.studentloans.gov if you have never done so for the direct loan program at CSUF. You will need your FAFSA pin which may be obtained at www.pin.ed.gov.

• Your loan funds will be sent electronically (EFT) to the University and deposited into a University checking account.

• The Office of Financial Aid confirms your continued eligibility for the loan funds and authorizes Student Financial Services (SFS) to prepare your disbursement. Any outstanding University obligations are paid first and, if funds remain, the balance is disbursed to you. Loan funds are disbursed at least twice a week throughout the semester.
  • You must be enrolled at least half-time to receive a loan disbursement.


• If the semester has begun and it has been more than 2 weeks since you completed all the requirements and you still have not received your disbursements, please contact our office.
