College of Arts

The awards and scholarships have been established to support and recognize outstanding scholarship and creativity and to assist students majoring in the visual arts, music, theater and dance. Unless otherwise indicated, applications, deadlines and other information concerning scholarships may be obtained from the dean’s office and from the departments within the College of Arts (COTA).
Note: Some scholarships are available for entering students in art, music and theatre/dance. Please contact the departments for full details.
Florence Millner Arnold Scholarship
Amount: Two $600 awards (variable)
Established by: This scholarship was established by the Art Department to recognize creative achievement. Recipients are honored at the annual Art Alliance luncheon in early December.
Open to: This scholarship is open to full-time continuing undergraduate visual arts majors in drawing, painting, illustration, photography, printmaking and sculpture.
Criteria: Creative achievement as demonstrated in submitted images of current artwork

California China Painters Association Scholarship
Amount: $500 (dependent upon funding)
Established by: This scholarship was established by the Art Department. Selection is based on portfolio review. Awarded for traditional/descriptive art forms with preference for works reflecting realism. Applicants to the Florence Millner Arnold Scholarship are considered for this award.
Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing undergraduate art majors with a preference given to those producing realistic work.
Criteria: Creative achievement as demonstrated in current artwork

The Althea Bernhard McLaren Art Award in Child Development
Amount: $250 and a plaque (subject to funding)
Established by: This scholarship is named in memory of Althea Bernhard McLaren by her husband, Dr. Robert McLaren, Professor Emeritus, CSUF. Selection of the recipient will include a review of how your drawing, painting, sculpture or music fosters creativity and art appreciation among children.
Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing junior and senior students with a major in Child and Adolescent Studies and either Visual Art or Music.

John and Flora Olsen Scholarship

MUSIC
The Music Department offers a number of scholarships. The department gratefully acknowledges the generosity of our donors.
Students should submit only one scholarship application to the Music Department. They will then be considered for all scholarships for which they may be eligible.
Scholarships are awarded only to students who have applied to CSUF prior to the auditions.
New Students
Scholarships for entering students are based upon performance at auditions held in early Spring of each year. Decisions are made in consideration of the quality of the student’s audition, the donors’ wishes and the Department’s needs. Scholarship amounts may range from modest assistance for one year to full-fee awards for four years. In some cases, scholarships awarded for one or two years may be renewed. Students should submit only one scholarship application to the Music Department. They will then be considered for all scholarships for which they may be eligible.
Prospective students with outstanding high school records are urged to apply for the “President’s Scholars Program”, a CSUF award for California residents that provides a full four-year scholarship and many other benefits.
Charles Baker Scholarship (Cello)

Music Associates Performance Awards

Nine winners are selected, 3 winners from each area (keyboard, vocal, and instrumental). The overall winner is also awarded a special performance with the University Orchestra.
