ASI Overview

With funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF Grant # 1953471) , we will be organizing a series of  three Advanced Studies Institutes (ASI) in Uzbekistan during 2022-2024. The ASIs will engage advanced Ph.D. students in active learning and research at the frontiers of knowledge in broader areas of Analysis and Mathematical Physics. Each ASI will be one to two weeks long and will consist of  intensive courses given by the ASI lecturers. Each ASI will include two senior faculty (ASI lecturers) and several invited lecturers as well as 15 to 20 student participants from the United States, and about the same number of researchers and graduate students from Uzbekistan and other countries. The ASIs will serve as a catalyst for future international collaborations that promote, encourage and engage students from underrepresented groups including female students. The ASI lecturers and invited speakers from the United States are Mario Bonk, Marcelo Disconzi, Dzmitry Dudko, Svetlana Jitomirskaya, Norman Levenberg, Mikhail Lyubich, Volodymyr Melnykov, Sergei Merenkov, Guido Montufar, Michael Murray, Michael Porter and Rishi Sonthalia as well as Ravshan Ashurov (Uzbekistan), Turgay Bayraktar (Turkey), Zhiqiang Li (China), Sabyasachi Mukherjee (India), Jamolbek Mattiev (Uzbekistan), Pekka Pankka (Finland) and Angelica Torres (Germany). 

The research focus of the ASIs will be on contemporary topics in Analysis on Fractal Spaces, Dynamical Systems, Data Science, Machine Learning, Pluripotential Theory and Mathematical Physics. Contemporary mathematics has become a truly international endeavor and hence it is important that students grasp this early on and start cementing their international network of researchers. Each ASI, through its lectures and research related activities, will serve as a platform to incorporate the latest developments in these areas into education and research for graduate students. The ASIs will build on the successful collaborations already established through two USA-Uzbekistan conferences, held in 2014 and 2017, and the USA-Uzbekistan Collaborative Research in Leibniz Algebras (international REU program), held 2017-2023. We will focus on supporting advanced graduate students and active researchers from a wide variety of colleges and universities in the U.S. Applications from advanced bachelor and masters students will be considered provided they have strong letters of support from their advisors/professors but priority will be given to Ph.D. students in their 3rd - 5th year. The cultural component of the project includes traveling to the ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva to learn about the cultural and scientific heritage of Uzbekistan. The ASIs will be held at Urgench State University in Uzbekistan.
