Fall Update for Faculty
August 2007
New Versions of Microsoft Office
In January 2007 Microsoft released a new version of Office for PCs. In January of 2008 the new Mac version will become available. The new versions include feature enhancements, dramatic changes to the user interface, and a new file format. IT has been releasing Office 2007 gradually to the campus and is providing training and online documentation to help ensure a smooth transition. We plan to use the same strategy for Office 2008 next year.
IT has worked with campus committees to formulate a strategy for our Office 2007 release. This has involved releasing the new version to users who are ready and letting folks who need more time to wait to install the new version. Per the recommendation of the Academic Senate’s IT Committee, In October we plan to push Office 2007 to the remaining campus PCs. If October is not a good time for you, you may want to consider switching to the new version earlier. Details about the conversion process and how it affects you are available in our Office 2007 FAQ at http://www.fullerton.edu/it/Services/Software/faq/Office2007_faq.asp
New TitanCard/U.S. Bank Branch
You are invited to stop by the TitanCard Services counter in Pollak Library to get your 50th Anniversary TitanCard. There is no charge if you turn in your old card. Without an exchange, the cost is the standard replacement card fee of $10.

U.S. Bank’s branch on the first floor of Titan Shops is open, with an ATM at that site and another in the TSU lobby. (The OCTFCU service center remains in its second floor location in Titan Shops.)
Printer Rollout
Help Desk staff have been replacing the old personal printers on campus with new HP 5650 inkjets and Dell 1710 laser printers. All the major buildings have been completed. Irvine campus and smaller campus buildings remain and should be finished before the semester starts. If we missed you and you would like to get your printer upgraded, please email itrollout@fullerton.edu.
Campus File Server
This fall, IT will be releasing a new network service for campus users. The Campus File Server provides 2 gigabytes of shared space for each user. It is a good place for users to store important documents that need extra security or that need to be easily reached from off-site. If you have a PC desktop, the share will appear as a “K” drive in your “my computer” folder on your desktop. If you have Mac desktop, the share will appear as a mount point that matches your username on your desktop. Details about the file server are available in on our website at http://www.fullerton.edu/it/services/Hardware/FAQ/campus_fileserver_faq.asp.
Laptop Security Update
Your laptop needs regular software updates in order to function properly. If a laptop doesn’t have the latest patches and security fixes it can run into several problems:
- It will have problems connecting to the campus VPN.
- It will have problems connecting to the campus wireless network.
- It could become compromised and a hacker could take control of the system, steal information, or destroy data on the laptop.
Please check out our laptop FAQs for more information. This is especially important if your laptop has not been connecting to the campus network regularly over the summer.
