Computing Labs & Classroom Technology

Campus-Wide Computer Labs Operated by Information Technology

IT ILC 0809 ReviewIn 2006 and 2007 Information Technology worked in partnership with University Library, Disabled Student Services, the University Learning Center, and the Writing Center to implement Phase I and II of the Information & Learning Commons (ILC). The goal of the ILC is to provide a physical, flexible space that allows students to access resources (computers, subscription databases, the Web, production software, and statistical packages), conduct research, write papers, create presentations, and produce projects in one seamless environment, thus reflecting our University’s mission and goals for student learning. ILC has the potential of facilitating active, out of class, inquiry-based learning that is contextual, engaging, and social.  It appeals to our existing students, as well as new, incoming users---the multitasking Net Generation---who have a preference for collaborative and active learning. Above all, it provides a centralized access point for multiple services---expert research, writing, and tech assistance is a quantum leap in support for students. Since Titan Lab resides in the University Library it also became part of the ILC.

Because of the success of ILC within the University Library in 2008, Information Technology expanded this model and opened McCarthy Commons in McCarthy Hall. McCarthy Commons provides a comfortable open lab facility that promotes new models of learning and collaborative activities. Special attention has been devoted to combining flexible space with integrated technologies that enhance and encourage communication and collaboration. Details such as the type of hardware and software available, the floor plan and choice of furniture in order to combine flexible space with integrated technologies that enhance and encourage communication and collaboration.

2009-2010 Goals

Information Learning Commons endeavors to offer additional services that continue to reflect our University’s mission and goals for student learning including: continued development of campus partnerships with IT and University Library to improve ILC services, continue gathering statistical data to assess and advance ILC services, incorporate IT expertise into University Library’s technical services, enhance the ILC webpage, continue to provide the latest software versions, improve hardware and add more equipment, research new technology and other academic environments.
