How to connect a computer from
Wireless and PC-Docking
Network to the Internet

Our campus offers access to the Internet for faculty, staff, students and guest using Wireless and Docking Network. Users are welcome to bring their own computer to access the Internet. Before accessing the Internet, there are a few points you must know. They are as follows:

CSU FULLERTON network uses Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to dynamically assign INTERNET PROTOCOL ADDRESS (IP: TCP/IP is the common language computers use to communicate) to all computers on the campus network.

Before you can have a computer connected to the Internet, your computer must have a network adapter card installed and configured (PCMCIA network adapter for laptops and PCI network adapter for PC or MAC, preferably at the speed of 10/100 megabits per second (MBPS)). If you have a wireless card, visit the Card Compatibility web page.

This guide assumes that you already have a network card installed on your pc/laptop and have installed the manufacturer drivers.

Let's check that your network card is installed properly (PC ONLY)

  1. From your desktop, click on the START button Screenshot: Computer Start button
  2. For Windows 2000, click on Settings > Network Dial-up Connections
For Windows XP, click on Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connection

  4. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties

  5. Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are selected

  6. Next, you should re-boot your computer. Find a network jack in any room on campus and connect it to your pc network adapter. (using a category 5 network cable)

If you have a wireless card, it should automatically detect a network connection. See the Wireless Network Locations web site.
  7. Make sure that Internet Explorer is configured to automatically detect the network connection.
To do this, Go to Control Panel > Internet Option > Click on the Connection Tab > Click on LAN Settings > Click on Automatic detect settings

  8. Once you are connected to the Internet, you will need to authenticate. For instructions on how to authenticate, visit the wireless FAQ page.
