Anti-Virus
It is important that you take steps to verify you are using the latest antivirus software available. Please take a few moments to be sure you are at the latest version and set up with the maximum protection enabled (Macintosh users please click HERE).
The campus licenses the McAfee antivirus suite from Network Associates for Windows computers. (If you have chosen to install another product, such as Norton or F-Prot, please take whatever steps are needed to protect yourself. Do not use McAfee in combination with any other antivirus program).
If your computer connects from on campus your antivirus software can be automatically updated using ePolicy Orchestrator. To see if you have this already installed on your computer look for a blue shield in the lower right "tray" of your screen.
If this icon is not present install ePolicy Orchestrator by clicking HERE.

Installing VirusScan Enterprise Version 8.0 (VSE 8.0) IMPORTANT: You will want to install VSE 7.1 at an off-peak usage time for your server as the installation may require a reboot. To verify that antivirus has been installed click the "Start" button and look for the Network Associates program folder, as shown below (Note: You will NOT see the shield in the system tray until you log off and back on to the server):

Configuring VSE 8.0
If VSE 7.1 is already installed on your server you should see a small shield with a V on it in the lower right, "tray" area of your screen. If you do not see this icon it is recommended that you install VSE 8.0.

To verify that the latest updates are installed right click the shield and click About VirusScan Enterprise. You will see a screen similar to this:

You are "current" if the versions appear as follows:
VirusScan Enterprise (top line): v8.0

Servers may require different configurations than workstations and in many cases need as little interference as possible so as not to reduce performance. For this reason it is recommended that you use the configuration that best fits your needs. Configurations can be set to scan all files or only certain file types. Scanning all files can slightly reduce performance, but provides the most comprehensive virus protection.
For a comprehensive guide regarding the configuration of VSE 8.0, click here. For those who prefer a more hands-off approach to configuring antivirus, the helpdesk highly recommends installing the ePO agent on your server. The ePO agent offers the following benefits:
1) Antivirus policy regarding configuration settings will be received from our ePO server, which means less configuration for you as an administrator.
2) The antivirus software on your machine will report to our ePO server regarding any viruses on your server, which allows us to notify you should your server become infected.
3) Antivirus updates can be deployed to your server automatically, which ensures that your server is optimally protected against the newest viruses.
To install the ePO agent on your server, open Internet Explorer to the help desk page http://www.fullerton.edu/it/services/security/antivirus.asp (this page) and click HERE to start the installation. Once the installation is complete, the ePO agent should appear in the system tray in about 15 minutes, as shown below:

If you have questions or concerns regarding the ePO agent and how it will affect your server, please contact the Titan Helpdesk at 7777.
In order to detect and remove the latest viruses, both the anti-virus definitions and scanning engine must be current. The definitions (also known as DAT files) contain the information required to detect and remove threats. The definitions provide information on which viruses to look for and where to look for them. Updated definitions are usually released every Wednesday afternoon. In response to new viruses, the definitions may be released before Wednesday to prevent outbreaks.
Just as important as the virus definitions is the scanning engine. The engine understands all the different structures in which a virus could be present - EXE files, MS Office files, Linux files, etc. New engines are released every 6-9 months in response to operating system and application changes. Using an old engine can result in ineffective scanning/cleaning of viruses and strange operating system.
and application behavior.
For up-to-date information on the latest antivirus definitions and engine, visit http://www.nai.com/us/downloads/updates/default.asp.
