Office 2007 FAQ

What is the deployment plan for the campus?
New computers from IT will come with Office 2007.  Users with other newer computers with at least one gigabyte of RAM can opt to get the new version by calling the Help Desk at x7777.  Laptop users should bring their laptops to the Help Desk front desk at PLN 220 M-F 8-5 to see if their machine can get the new version.  Office 2007 is not recommended for older computers with less than one gigabyte of RAM.

How do I get the new version for my laptop or home PC?
First, please view our orientation at http://etd.fullerton.edu/office2007/orientation.htm.  Then request a CD on our website at http://www.fullerton.edu/it/services/Software/software_request.asp.

What are the benefits of the new version?
There are numerous enhancements with Office 2007.  We cover a few of them in the orientation.  More details are available from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/office/newday/default.mspx

How does the new file format affect me?
Office 2007 uses a new, XML-based file format.  The format change is necessary to take advantage of the new features of Office 2007.  You will need to be aware of who needs to be able to access the file and if you should save it in the new or old format.  By the end of June most campus computers will be able to open and edit the new file format.

How can people without Office 2007 view files created with the new version?
The most obvious solution is to save new documents in a format that most people can open, either Word 97-2003 format or PDF.

Office XP and Office 2003 can open the new format if a compatibility tool has been installed.  Some campus users, laptop users, and most off campus users will need to install the tool from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en in order to be able to open the new file format

What Training is available for the new version?
Campus Information Technology will be offering training on Microsoft Office 2007. To see a class schedule of available training sessions, please use your campus portal (http://my.fullerton.edu) and click the “Training” tab at the top of the page.
