Uksun Kim, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Uksun KimDr. Uksun Kim is an assistant professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). He received his B.S. degree in Architectural Engineering from Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea). He has two M.S. degrees. One is from Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea) in the field of Architectural Engineering and the other is from Michigan State University (East Lansing, USA) in the field of Civil Engineering. He earned his Ph.D. degree with emphasis in structural engineering from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Related to his industrial experience, he worked as a senior researcher with the Steel Structure Research Laboratory at the Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (Korea) from 1992 to 1998 on the development of innovative and cost-effective structural systems. He carried out lots of research projects successfully through extensive experimental and analytical investigations such as development of high-rise steel framed apartment, development of light-gauged steel frame housing, etc.

He joined California State University, Fullerton in Fall 2005 as an assistant professor. He is a member of major professional organizations in the field of civil engineering such as ASCE, AISC, etc. Last year (2008), he funded by a $ 25,000 grant from the South Korea-based Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (RIST) and successfully finished this research. The title of the research project was “Design Issues for High Strength Steel and Civil Engineering Applications in the United States.”

His expertise is centered on the design of steel-framed buildings and earthquake engineering.
