Sahar Nia teaches us how to make Baklava

Let’s kick off week 4 with Sahar and a Middle Eastern sweet treat, baklava! Sahar has been making this dish with her Mom since she was a little kid. They make baklava for Persian gatherings at her relative's houses for parties, holidays, and also for Persian new year. Thank you for sharing, Sahar! I can’t wait to make it!

Sahar's Baklava Recipe

Ingredients:
16 oz Apollo Fillo Phyllo Pastry Sheet (1 box)

3 teaspoons of ground cardamom

¼ cup of rose water

½ cup of sugar

2 cups of skinless almonds

1 cup of honey

2 sticks of unsalted butter

 

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Place almonds into food processer and blend until smooth
  3. Rub some butter on the bottom of the tray
  4. Cover the tray with half of the pastry sheet
  5. Pour the crushed almonds on top of the pastry sheet
  6. Add the sugar and ground cardamom to the crushed almonds and mix
  7. Flatten out the mixture throughout the pastry sheet on the tray
  8. Sprinkle rose water on top of mixture
  9. Place the other half of the pastry sheet on top of the mixture
  10. Cut up baklava into small squares
  11. Place in oven for 40 minutes or until top of the baklava is crispy and golden
  12. Turn off oven and let the baklava sit in the oven for another 10 minutes before taking it out
  13. Drizzle honey on top of the baklava and it’s ready to serve.
