Diversity Initiatives & Resource Centers Overview

The mission of the Diversity Initiatives & Resource Centers (D.I.R.C.) is to create learning environments and opportunities that promote community and social consciousness.

D.I.R.C. oversees five identity-based resource centers on campus: African American Resource Center, Asian Pacific American Resource Center, Chicana & Chicano Resource Center

OPPORTUNITY OVERVIEW

D.I.R.C. student lead positions are a unique one academic year leadership experience.  The student lead positions provide an opportunity for students to contribute their knowledge and skills to work directly with the following communities: African American, Asian Pacific Islander Desi American, Chicanx/Latinx, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and undocumented students.  


Through these leadership positions students will gain the following experiences:

  • Learn about marginalized experiences of others, while thinking of your own social identities
  • Understand privilege, oppression, and intersectionality
  • Work as a team and support others (individuals, centers and departments)
  • Learn to engage in processes that embrace inclusive communities

OPPORTUNITY LOGISTICS

Schedule of Centers: Monday -Thursday 8:00 am-7:00 pm

Hours: 10 hours on average/week with possibility of more

Compensation: $11/hour

 

Schedule & Meeting Requirements

Must be available to work 10 hours per week (on average)

Based on your placement, you must attend weekly staff meetings:

  • African American Resource Center  ::  Fridays, 9:00-10:00a
  • Asian Pacific American Resource Center  ::  Fridays, 9:00-10:00a
  • Chicana & Chicano Resource Center  ::  Fridays, 9:00-10:00a
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Resource Center  ::  Fridays, 9:00-10:00a
  • Titan Dreamers Resource Center  :  Fridays, 8:00-10:00a

Attend Monthly Diversity Initiatives and Resource Center meetings on the following Fridays from 10:30a-12:30p

Training Requirements

Attend Diversity Initiatives and Resource Centers staff training during the summer and winter sessions:

  • Thursday-Friday, January 18-19, 2018

Attend professional development opportunities suggested/recommended.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enrolled in Fall and Spring semesters
  • Maintain a 2.5 minimum G.P.A.
  • Ability and willingness to understand and articulate issues of multiculturalism, cross-cultural communication, racism, sexism, heterosexism, homophobia, classism, ableism, xenophobia, religious oppression etc.
  • Ability to work within D.I.R.C.’s mission statement  
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and multiple projects 
  • Proven experience working cooperatively as part of a team 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and group settings
  • Work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff and the wider community which the university serves
  • Ability to stay abreast of current events on campus and general campus climate
  • Must be able to work some nights & weekends
  • Working knowledge of desktop publishing software and PC computers
  • Self-motivated, good organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize, multitask and meet deadlines

 


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide publicity support to garner interest and recruit participants for programs
  • Provide front desk staff coverage some time between the hours of 9:00 am to 7:00 pm
  • Assist with DIRC or center administrative duties including data entry, photocopying, and respond to Center emails and phone calls   
  • Assist in facility maintenance including, but not limited to basic cleaning, furniture rearrangements, and supply inventory  
  • Assist in setting up and taking down equipment for events and programs
  • Attend one-on-one meetings with a full-time Center Coordinator or Graduate Student Assistant
  • Attend weekly all staff Center meetings  
  • Providing updates on weekly project progress during one-on-one meetings  
  • Lead tours, information sessions, and workshops with campus visitors (K-12, community college students, and campus community)
  • Nurture a welcoming environment for visitors to the center
  • Provide ongoing, individual, and critical team feedback for the overall growth and development of entire team
  • Ability to work with other student leads from all centers
  • Other duties as assigned

POSITION DESCRIPTIONS

D.I.R.C. lead positions that are available for each center are the following:

COMMUNICATIONS & GRAPHIC DESIGN LEAD

The Communications & Graphic Design Lead  is responsible for using a social justice framework to design marketing materials, publicize upcoming events, and manage social media content.   This student lead must have a proficiency in Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and social media platforms.  

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in designing marketing and educational materials for the Center’s events, including but not limited to flyers, invitations, posters, and social media posts
  • Assist in creating content and social justice education material for the Center on social media platforms, including but not limited to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr
  • Assist in managing and creating content to promote the Center’s events on online and print platforms including but not limited to CSUF portal, social media platforms, electronic newsletter, website, and campus publications
  • Assist in maintaining the Center’s social media presence, including, but not limited to, scheduling Facebook and Twitter updates
  • Assist in developing content for the Center’s newsletter and maintaining the newsletter’s subscribers

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT LEAD

The Community Engagement Lead is responsible for fostering relationships with on and off campus groups, increasing visibility of the Center, and representing the Center and Department at various campus and community outreach events.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in developing, nurturing, and maintaining relationships with various campus groups including but not limited to student organizations, residential life, new student orientation, student government, on-campus departments, DIRC partners, community-based groups, K-12 youth, etc.
  • Assist in outreaching to non-affiliate organizations and campus-wide entities, via email, phone or attend meetings to make announcements and updates about the Center
  • Assist in coordinating Center staff for tabling or presentations about the Center
  • Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating workshops or programs that provide information about the population the Center serves
  • Attend campus events, programs and meetings to create relationships with various campus organizations and campus partners
  • Assist in creating programs or events that promote community building within the Center’s community and across multiple identity based communities

COMMUNITY SUCCESS LEAD

The Community Success Lead is responsible for connecting students to on and off-campus resources, coordinating programs that help students reach their educational goals, and empowering students to succeed academically.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in planning events and programs that provide students with tools to be academically successful such as, but not limited to, time management,  resume workshop, health education, study skills, financial literacy, and spiritual support  
  • Assist in creating an environment for academic success in the Center
  • Communicate with campus partners about planning and implementing year-long programs and events on retention
  • Assist in maintaining a list of scholarship information and on-campus resources
  • Assist in researching and seeking input from students on the current trends for academic support for the Center’s community
  • Collaborate with other interns to support and create innovative academic success programs
  • Assist in coordinating and planning services provided during extended hours for finals weeks

IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMING LEAD

The Identity Development Programming Lead is responsible for using a social justice lens to create opportunities for students to explore their identities; facilitate discussions about social and identity development;  and support students in understanding their experiences with power, privilege, and oppression.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in planning, organizing and evaluating collaborative programs on the topics of identity intersections and social identities
  • Assist in facilitating opportunities for students to connect with faculty and staff around identity development
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining relationship with the ASI Association for Intercultural Awareness (AICA) to implement and support related programs
  • Assist in developing, publicizing, and facilitating at least four identity development workshops and programs, including but not limited to film dialogues, interactive workshops, art expression, passive displays etc.

SOCIAL JUSTICE EDUCATOR LEAD

The Social Justice Educator Lead is responsible for coordinating programs that engage students in thinking critically about current issues and providing social justice education.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in planning, organizing, publicizing, and evaluating four to six Social Justice programs per semester
  • Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating diversity workshops and programs for a variety of campus partners
  • Assist in developing, nurturing, and maintaining relationships with various campus groups including but not limited to student organizations, residential life, new student orientation, student government, on-campus departments, D.I.R.C. partners, community-based groups, K-12 youth, etc.
  • Assist with training and workshop requests; work with Coordinator to track and document groups who have participated in workshops/trainings
  • Engage in learning opportunities as assigned by Coordinator, to increase knowledge base and educational capacity.
  • Assist in creating materials and collaborating with Association for Intercultural Awareness (AICA) for Tunnels of Oppression programming

THIS POSITION IS ONLY AVAILABLE WITH THE DEPARTMENT LEVEL-D.I.R.C.
D.I.R.C. COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING LEAD

For the department specifically, the Communications and Marketing Lead reports to the Director.

*Must be able to work 20 hours. This position is for the whole department (D.I.R.C.)

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in designing and editing the department website in coordination with department Director
  • Assist in developing content for the department website that is meaningful, relevant, vibrant, professional, easy to navigate, and regularly updated.
  • Assist the resource centers with updating their websites and content.
  • Assist with creating graphics for various promotional and educational materials when needed.
  • Assist with the department’s social media platforms – Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Graphics Design Leads at all five centers to promote programs and events

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need to have work-study to apply?
No you do not need to have work-study to apply to this position.

I want to do multiple positions for one center, how do I apply?
For each position that you want to apply for, you will need to start a new application.  Additionally, if you want to apply to any other center you will need to do a separate application.  Each center and each position requires an application.

I want to apply to different centers and different positions, how do I apply?
For each position and each center that you apply to, you will need to submit a separate application.

Can graduate students apply?
Yes.  This is not considered a graduate student assistantship, but we are happy to have graduate students apply.

Can other graduate students from non-CSUF campuses apply?
At this moment, no.

Can I edit my application?
No you cannot edit your application after it has been submitted. If you have questions please email dirc@fullerton.edu

What happens if I do not submit my resume to dirc@fullerton.edu?
Your application will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.

Am I required to attend an information session?
No, it is not required, but it is highly encouraged.

Will all applicants receive an interview?
Not every applicant will receive an interview.  Due to a high volume of applications, we are unable to interview everyone. Students who receive an interview will be contacted.

I am a non-DACA student, can I apply?  As a non-DACA student, will I be paid if selected for a role?
Yes, non-DACA students are encouraged to apply.  At this time, the Department is exploring whether it will be able to hire non-DACA students in the various DIRC student leadership positions.  We don’t have a clear answer at this time, but we hope to have one within the next few weeks.  In the meantime, we encourage all students to apply.  We can’t make any promises that we can hire non-DACA students, and so we will communicate with you when we have an answer as to whether we will be able to hire you and pay you.
