Prospective Student-Athletes

Why Become A Titan?

You will hear on campus often the phrase, "It takes a Titan".  Together we will live up to our bold claims while showing the world what it takes to prevail.  We will put our shoulder to the transformative wheel that is CSUF; to lift lives and shift narratives; to create opportunity and manifest social justice; and to do so through a strength-based lens that recognizes that all students enrich our campus and world beyond measure."  That is who we are and that is what it means to be a Titan.   Cal State Fullerton is an amazing place to attend school for many reasons.  We have a beautiful campus, with a diverse student body.  We are a student-centered campus and we have so many resources to help our students be successful in the classroom and in life.   We offer more than 50 undergraduate degrees and nearly 50 master's programs.  When is comes to athletics, our varsity athletic teams have won 24 Big West Championships and our athletic department was the recipient of the Commissioner's Cup (an honor awarded to the conference's winningest athletics department in 2017-18).   Our programs are spearheaded by the  2019 Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year award  link opens in a new window , Jim Donovan.

Do you have what it takes to be a Titan?

IT TAKES A TITAN

Who We Are, And What We Do

What Makes Our Campus So Special?

We are a very large institution that feels like a home.   Because our class room sizes are small (most are 20-40 people, with our largest lecture hall being approx. 200), the students are able to have the interaction with the professor that many of them are looking for. This is one of the most important items that most students communicate that they are looking for in their prospective university.

We have over 110+ majors that are highly regarded throughout the country.

Our faculty are very passionate about their field of study, they are experts in their field and they are equally as passionate about being in the classroom teaching.  You will not see teacher’s aides as much as you would at an institution that places a higher value on research.  We are considered a teaching institution, where our focus is student centered and we put the highest value on the student experience.

I believe that you will see that fact come to light through all of the resources that our campus offers to our students.  Our hope is that every student is able to find a place on campus that will make enrich their collegiate experience.   A place where they feel that they really fit in.  Our greater hope is that there may be more than one place that a student can really connect and thrive, and we love to help make those connections for our students.

CSUF News   We Are Cal State Fullerton

Who We Are, And What We Do

Athletic Academic Services is a place where our students can explore who they are in the class room and away from the courts, fields, diamonds or golf course.   We are there for our students to help them navigate the transition from being a high school student to college student., or if they are coming from another college campus.  Our counselors at Cal State Fullerton, we have four full time counselors, are there to welcome our incoming and prospective student-athletes to our campus. It is something that we really enjoy, mainly because we are so proud of this campus that we call home.  We also love getting the chance to showcase our campus family and how great we think that people that you will work with are at what they do. All of our AAS counselors have been Div. 1 student-athletes.   What this means is that we understand what is needed for the student-athlete to be successful.  We have experienced many of the things that the student-athletes have during their time on campus, and we are prepared to help them through this process.

One of the benefits of you becoming a Titan is having a dedicated athletic academic adviser that specializes in working with your team and that you are able to meet with when needed.   Some of our primary roles include: academic advising and preparing graduation plans with our students; monitoring eligibility and communicating with our compliance department; strategizing with students who are interested in graduate school; assisting with the admissions process; helping our students make connections across campus; and many other aspects of student support.

If you are interested in playing varsity sports at CSUF, this is not the place to fill out a prospective student-athlete form and share your interest in that program with the coaching staff.  We want to make sure that you end up in the right place, so make sure that you visit our main athletic website, where you can find information on your specific sport, HERE.     However, if you are interested in seeing all of the other things that we do, you are in the right place.

Services

Athletic Academic Services Student-Athlete support services include, but are not limited to:

Priority Registration

Helping our students make the transition to a new college is an important part of what we do. We are here to assist you with the navigation of the Cal State system, and specifically Cal State Fullerton,  in a way that is efficient and effective. Being that we have nearly 40,000 students that attend CSUF, being able to offer priority registration to our students, is just one of the ways in which we help our student-athletes in their journey.

Missed Class Letters

Our office utilizes the missed class letters in an effort to proactively communicate with faculty on campus.  We realize that there are many challenges to being a full time student and a full time student-athlete. Our goal is to help guide them in their communication with the faculty regarding any issues with missing class when they travel. If there are any issues with missing class, we can assist them with finding a class that may be a better fit.

Grade Checks

We track the progress of our student-athletes throughout the semester at weeks 8 and 12 utilizing the grade check system. By doing so we are able to troubleshoot with them adjustments that need to be made during the semester in their classes and what resources are available for them for more support. Through these grade checks, we are able to help them prepare to have the important conversations with their professors so that real changes can be made to be successful.

Life Skills Program

One of our programs that sets us apart from other schools in our conference, and across the nation, is our Life Skills program.  This program prepares our students for life beyond college. We made it a priority to have a space where students can explore their interests and we can help them prepare for a life beyond their playing careers.

D.E.G.R.E.E. Program

Titan DEGREE (Division I, Eligibility, Graduation, Retention, Engage, Empower) Program

The DEGREE Program is a comprehensive academic support program for student-athletes enrolled in support courses, and/or with a cumulative GPA of less than 2.5. AAS are proud recipients of the NCAA Accelerating Academic Success Program Multi-Year Grant thanks to the creative, objective based academic support provided to our student-athletes.

Our student athletes have access to, through the DEGREE program,  Learning Specialists, graduate level mentors, tutors and other support services through this program.  It is our priority to help those student athletes that need a little more structure, learn how to become more self sufficient during their college careers.  In addition to the support that we offer those students that may have a higher need, we offer our DEGREE lab, which houses 30+ computers, private tutoring spaces, and access to other resources that may be of help to them.  In this program we have two (2)  Learning Specialists that work in our study lab that provide additional support to our students.  These Learning Specialists are very hands on and will work with the students to provide individualized support programs that fit perfectly with their needs.

Orientation

One of the roles of the counselors is to help each of our incoming students through the admissions process.  Following that we also assist with orientation and helping them register for their classes.   The goal here is to help them understand what is needed in the transition and to have the important conversations around their academic interests and what they would like to study during their time on our campus.  Our staff truly enjoys getting to be a part of this process with the student athletes and we work very hard to be as helpful as we can in this process.  Being that we mainly advise our students for their GE classes, we make sure that they get connected with staff and advisers in their prospective major departments, as we provide residual support in this area.

Services provided by AAS for the student-athletes:

ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT It is mandatory for all new and continuing student-athletes to meet with an Athletics Academic Services Counselor at least once per semester for general education academic advisement. Additionally, once student-athletes have declared a major, they must also meet with their major advisors at least once per semester to ensure they are making satisfactory progress toward graduation in major coursework. Student-athletes are advised to select courses which will not only help them maintain athletics eligibility, but also lead them directly to graduation. Further, the advisement process encourages student-athletes to take ownership of their academic progress and make appropriate decisions regarding their goals.

ACADEMIC COUNSELING Academic counseling is designed to provide proactive academic monitoring and guidance for student-athletes confronting a variety of academic challenges. Regular individual meetings with Athletics Academic Counselors are designed to facilitate the development of study skills, such as note-taking, effective reading strategies, test preparation, and time management. Referrals to tutoring provided by Athletics Academic Services or other campus resources are made on an individual basis.

PRIORITY REGISTRATION Priority registration helps ensure that student-athletes can develop schedules which will allow them to carry a full class load, make progress toward graduation and compete in their respective sports. All student-athletes, including those who have exhausted their eligibility, receive priority registration. Student-athletes are notified of the first day of priority registration. They are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the priority registration date to ensure that they get the classes they need for graduation and for scheduling purposes.

Important Campus Resources

Athletic Academic Services proudly partners with our campus partners to be able to provide holistic support for our student-athletes.  There are so many places across campus, not just in our space or in athletics, where student-athletes can make connections with other students.  As stated before, we want to help facilitate that for our students. Here are just some of the spaces and places where our students can connect:
