Living Here

Living on campus at Cal State Fullerton means becoming part of a vibrant residential community designed to support your academic success, personal growth, and sense of belonging. This page gives you an overview of what to expect once you move in.

Community Living Expectations

All residents are expected to contribute to a safe, respectful, and inclusive living environment. Living on campus means:

  • Sharing space with other students
  • Respecting quiet hours and community standards
  • Following university and Housing policies
  • Taking responsibility for your actions within the community

Community living is built on cooperation, communication, and mutual respect.

Roommates and Roommate Matching

All on-campus residents live in shared spaces, including shared bedrooms, suites, or apartments.

As part of the application, you will complete a Roommate Profile Questionnaire. Your responses help suggest compatible roommates based on lifestyle preferences such as:

  • Sleep schedule
  • Cleanliness
  • Study habits
  • Social preferences

Preferred roommates are not guaranteed. Room assignments are based on eligibility, availability, and application timing. If you are selected for room selection, you may:

  • View suggested roommate profiles
  • Send roommate requests
  • Accept incoming roommate requests

Students who are placed from the waitlist are assigned to available spaces based on eligibility and availability.

Your Roommate Profile

Your roommate bio allows you to introduce yourself to potential roommates. You may include your major, interests, personality, and what you value in a living environment.

  • This section is optional

  • You may edit your bio after submission

  • Your bio is visible to other applicants and Housing staff

  • Character limits apply

Roommate Personality Type Quiz

Animals

Inside the Housing Application, you'll find a light hearted Roommate Personality Type Quiz. It is designed to help you think about your living style and roommate preferences before selection begins.

The quiz matches you with one of five personality types commonly seen in our residential communities:

  • Falcon: The focused achiever
  • Duck: The balanced socializer
  • Border Collie: The energetic extrovert
  • Cat: The relaxed independent
  • Koi Fish: The go with the flow type

This quiz is just for fun and does not impact room assignments. It is simply a way to explore your roommate vibe before completing your official roommate profile.

Gender-Inclusive Housing

Gender-Inclusive Housing allows residents to share a room, suite, or apartment with individuals of any gender identity. This option is available in all residential communities and theme living communities.

This option:

  • Is completely optional

  • Does not increase your likelihood of being selected

  • Is available to all students

  • Is not intended for romantic couples

Students who select this option will only be assigned with others who have also opted in.

Theme Living Communities

Theme Living Communities provide an enhanced residential experience centered on shared interests, identity, or academic focus. These communities offer additional programming, connection to campus resources, and intentional engagement.

Examples may include:

  • Cultural identity communities
  • Transfer student communities
  • LGBTQ+ focused communities

Themed housing living communities are open and available to all students who are interested to apply and/or participate, regardless of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin. If you are accepted into a theme living community that is not offered in your eligible room type, your theme placement may override your room type eligibility.

Emergency Preparedness

As part of your application, you will provide emergency related information so the university can respond effectively in critical situations.

You will be asked to:

  • Provide emergency contact information
  • Identify a confidential Missing Person Contact
  • Indicate any mobility or accessibility needs related to evacuation
  • Share a general evacuation plan

This information is used only for emergency planning and student safety.

Medical, Disability, and Dietary Accommodations

Students with disabilities or medical needs are encouraged to live on campus. Housing partners with Disability Support Services (DSS) to provide reasonable accommodations when approved.

Important notes:

  • Students must apply separately through DSS

  • Approved accommodations do not change housing priority

  • Accommodations go into effect once a housing assignment is made

Meal Plans and Dining

Meal plans vary by room type and residential community. Some residents will select continuous access plans, while others may choose block plans with Dining Dollars and guest meals.

Meal plan changes are available during designated modification periods before the academic year begins.

Residents may also donate guest meals to support students experiencing food insecurity through campus Basic Needs programs.

Personal Property and Renter’s Insurance

Cal State Fullerton is not responsible for loss or damage to personal property. All residents are strongly encouraged to carry renter’s insurance before moving in.

Renter’s insurance may cover:

  • Theft

  • Fire damage

  • Water damage

  • Accidental loss

Housing partners with GradGuard to offer a student-focused renters insurance plan.
