Advising & Registration for First-Time Freshmen Students

Checklist for Incoming Freshmen:

General Education Advising

The College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) highly encourages incoming freshmen students to complete the General Education (GE) Advising Canvas modules titled First Time First Year General Education Advising. General Education is an important component of your degree requirements and the completion and familiarity of the GE modules will better prepare you for course registration. ALEKS Math Placement

ALEKS serves as a means for incoming freshmen in the College of Engineering & Computer Science to place into MATH 150A (Calculus). MATH 150A is an important foundation and requirement that is often a prerequisite for additional courses in your major. To receive clearance to register for MATH 150A by the time courses registration opens, you are strongly encouraged to complete ALEKS as soon as possible.

IMPORTANT: Please plan accordingly, expect to spend a few hours per day for about two weeks to complete all four ALEKS modules. You should aim to complete ALEKS by June 26 or at least no later than your orientation date.

Note for International Students: Before you register, you will take the Math Qualifying Exam (MQE) under proctored conditions in order to place into Calculus. International students are not eligible to enroll in ALEKS.

ECS Orientation Dates

The College of Engineering & Computer Science (ECS) will be meeting with ECS freshmen for advising and registration support during the afternoon portion of their in-person orientation on the following dates:

  • Friday, June 30
  • Monday, July 10
  • Thursday, July 13
  • Monday, July 17
  • Monday, July 24
  • Tuesday, July 25 
  • Thursday, July 27
  • Friday, July 28
  • Monday, July 31
  • Tuesday, August 1 

Students who signed up for virtual orientation will receive a separate email with further instructions on how to sign up for a virtual session with the ECS Student Success team for advising support.

Check your CSUF email frequently. The university, colleges, and departments throughout campus will use this as the primary mode of communication.

If you are expecting to receive credit from AP exams or other sources, please ensure that scores are requested for submission to CSUF. You can review credit by exam options via External ExaminationsPDF File .
