About the Exhibition

Th e  exhibition featured twenty-one large-scale photographs previously documented in Canadian photographer Jack Burman’s rare books,  The Dead: Vol. I & Vol. II documenting preserved people, specimens, skeletons and medical abnormalities. Raised in Toronto, Burman studied English literature at the University of Toronto before beginning his career as a photographer. Inspired by Peter Hujar’s Portraits in Life and Death and early photographs of Sicilian catacombs, he found the subject matter for which he is best known. Burman spent decades photographing the dead in medical and anatomy laboratories and catacombs throughout Europe, North and South America and beyond.
