Ceremony Etiquette & Protocols
By tradition, Commencement is a formal, dignified event to honor the achievements of graduating students. Graduates are expected to demonstrate etiquette appropriate to the occasion and respect for all fellow graduates and their families. In addition to wearing appropriate attire, graduates shall refrain from disruptive behavior.
Ceremony Etiquette and Crossing the Stage
To ensure an enjoyable ceremony, we ask that all attendees participate in a positive and respectful manner.
To that end, please:
- Adhere to the university's alcohol policy.
- Arrive promptly: Ensure you arrive on time to lineup, check in at the registration tent, receive your QR code and be in line for the processional.
- Remain in your designated seat for the duration of the ceremony.
- Silence cellphones and other devices.
- Show respect to Commencement speakers, event staff, faculty, fellow graduates and their guests.
- Professional photographers and videographers are prohibited.
- Air horns, noisemakers and other items that may disrupt the ceremony or other guests’ ability to view or hear the ceremony are strictly prohibited.
- Students will not be allowed to carry children, pets or personal items in the processional or across the stage. Service animals that are trained to assist students with disabilities are welcome at Commencement.
- Graduates are asked to cross the stage in a respectful, safe and professional manner, refraining from large outbursts, taking selfies, dancing or other actions that may disrupt the ceremony.
What to Bring
- There is no secure location for graduating students to store personal items during the ceremony. Please carry as little as possible. Bags of any size are not permitted in graduate areas.
- Your phone.
- Your regalia. You will don your regalia at the graduate lineup after you pass through the security screening. Volunteers will be on-site to assist you with your regalia. Flat shoes are recommended.
- Students are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles to fill at the water stations on campus before the ceremony.
GRADUATES CAN ONLY CROSS THE STAGE WITH A CELLPHONE
